Exam lights for clinics, wound care and home care visits: LED gooseneck floor lamps, mobile stands and table or wall mounts from Welch Allyn, Brandt, McKesson and Grafco.

An exam lamp puts bright, focused light exactly where the clinician is looking, so skin, wounds, ears and throats can be seen clearly. Today most exam lights are LED: brighter, cooler near the patient and with no bulbs to replace.

What to Look For

Brightness and color

Brightness is measured in lux at a working distance. The Welch Allyn Green Series 300 gives 20,000 lux at 12″ with a 5,500 K daylight color, so tissue colors look true. The Brandt 41724 gives about 12,000 lux at 12″ from seven LEDs.

Floor stand or mount

A mobile floor stand rolls from room to room. A table or wall mount, like the Welch Allyn Green Series table/wall mount, keeps the floor clear in a small exam room.

Budget

For simple, occasional use, the Grafco 1697-1 gooseneck lamp is a low-cost classic. The McKesson LED Exam Lamp adds a 12-watt LED and a no-drift gooseneck.

Our take: for daily exams, the Welch Allyn Green Series 300 is the light most practices end up with: true color, touchless on/off and an LED rated for 50,000 hours.

What people ask us most about exam lights.

Exam Light FAQs

Is LED better than halogen for an exam light?

Yes, for most uses. LED lights run cool near the patient, use less power and last tens of thousands of hours, so there are no bulbs to change.

How bright should an exam light be?

For general exams, 10,000 to 20,000 lux at the working distance is plenty. Minor procedures benefit from the brighter end of that range.

What does 5,500 K mean?

It is the color temperature of the light. 5,500 K is close to daylight, which shows skin and tissue in their true color.

Floor stand or wall mount?

A floor stand can move between rooms. A wall or table mount saves floor space and keeps the light in one exam room.

Can I use an exam light at home?

Yes. Home care nurses and families use gooseneck exam lights for wound care, ostomy care and skin checks.

How do I clean an exam light?

Turn it off and wipe it with a facility-approved disinfectant wipe. Touchless models like the Welch Allyn Green Series reduce how often the light head is handled.
