Medline bed recall: the short answer
Medline is exiting the bed market. On October 14, 2026 it began a voluntary removal and discontinuation of every Medline Brand homecare, bariatric and long-term care bed, citing fire and entrapment risks. Facilities should follow Medline's safety steps now and plan replacements. Joerns, Invacare, ProActive Medical and Graham-Field all make beds that can take their place.
What did Medline announce about its beds?
On October 14, 2026, Medline issued an urgent field safety notice announcing a voluntary product removal, discontinuation and market exit of all Medline Brand beds. It covers homecare, bariatric and long-term care beds and their pendants, accessories, replacement parts and bed-containing order packages. Medline cites electrical risks that may cause fire and entrapment risk from bed accessories.
Is the Medline bed exit a recall?
Medline calls it a voluntary field action: a product removal, discontinuation and market exit. Its customer response form is titled a Recall Response Form, and LeadingAge and many news reports describe it as a recall of all Medline beds. Either way, affected beds have to be taken out of service and replaced.
Which Medline beds are affected?
All Medline Brand beds: homecare beds, bariatric beds and long-term care beds, along with their hand-control pendants, accessories, replacement parts and order packages that contain a bed. LeadingAge reports that the notice came with a list of every affected item number and updates earlier notices that covered only certain product lines.
What Medline tells bed users to do
According to Medline's notice and the guidance AHCA/NCAL and LeadingAge shared with members:
- Immediately unplug the bed and any associated battery packs.
- Do not use the bed's electrical functions. The bed and mattress may stay in use in manual mode until the bed is replaced.
- Use electrical functions only in an emergency, and never with an extension cord.
- Do not use bed accessories, including side rails.
- Report adverse events to Medline, and contact the provider or distributor of the bed about removal and replacement.
Official sources: Medline's statement and customer notice, AHCA/NCAL member guidance and LeadingAge's summary.
Please note: MedCare Mobility is not affiliated with Medline and is not a recall administrator. We don't handle Medline removals, credits or reimbursements. We help you buy the replacement beds.
What should facilities do with Medline beds right now?
Follow Medline's notice: unplug each affected bed and its battery packs, stop using the electrical functions and stop using accessories such as side rails. The bed and mattress may stay in use in manual mode until replaced. Then count replacements by resident need and get written quotes with lead times from more than one manufacturer.
What facilities should do now: 7 steps
- Read Medline's notice and its list of affected item numbers, and match it against your bed inventory, building by building.
- Unplug and label each affected bed as the notice directs, disconnect battery packs, and stop using its side rails and accessories.
- Submit Medline's Recall Response Form and contact the distributor that supplied your beds about removal and replacement.
- Count replacements by resident need: standard long-term care, low or ultra-low for fall risk, wider decks, and bariatric.
- List the mattresses, rails and accessories each new bed needs. Do not assume Medline rails or mattresses fit a new frame.
- Ask for written quotes that show model, quantity and the manufacturer's current lead time for every line.
- Replace the highest-risk rooms first, and confirm each building's delivery address, dock and receiving contact.
What beds can replace Medline long-term care beds?
Common replacements are long-term care beds from Joerns, Invacare, ProActive Medical (Protekt) and Graham-Field. The Joerns EasyCare and Invacare CS600 lower to 7 inches with a 600 lb safe working load, the Protekt Protopia Ultra Low ranges from 7 to 31 inches, and the Graham-Field AmeriLux Ultra Low lowers to 4 inches.
These are the replacement beds we're quoting most for facilities. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's specifications on our product pages.

Compare Replacement Beds for Medline Beds
The main differences between replacement beds are how low they go, how wide the deck is and how much weight they carry. Ultra-low beds such as the AmeriLux reach 4 inches for fall risk, expandable beds like the Protopia EXP and CS600 Expandable widen the deck, and bariatric frames carry 750 lb or more.

How does the Medline bed exit affect nursing homes, SNFs and hospitals?
Because the action covers every Medline Brand bed, facilities that standardized on Medline beds must replace beds across whole buildings, not single rooms. Until then, beds run in manual mode without rails, which adds staff work and changes fall-prevention routines. Facilities that relied on Medline now need to order from other bed manufacturers, often at the same time.
What the Medline exit means for the long-term care industry
- Every model, every setting. The notice covers homecare, bariatric and long-term care beds, so it reaches nursing homes, assisted living, hospice and patients' homes alike (Medline notice).
- No more Medline parts. Pendants, accessories and replacement parts are part of the discontinuation, so repairing a Medline bed with Medline parts is no longer an option going forward (Medline notice).
- Care routines change now. With electrical functions off except in emergencies and side rails out of use, caregivers lose powered height and positioning until the bed is replaced (Medline notice, AHCA/NCAL).
- Distributors handle removal. LeadingAge notes that customers should contact the provider or distributor of the bed about removal and replacement.
- Associations are guiding members. AHCA/NCAL and LeadingAge each published member guidance on October 19, 2026.
- FDA involvement. Medline says it is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration while it assesses reported issues.
Is there a long-term care bed shortage in 2026?
No public data we have seen shows a national shortage. What is clear is that every Medline Brand bed is being removed at the same time, so many facilities need to order from other manufacturers at the same time. Facilities that order early, get lead times in writing and stay open on brand are best placed.
Mattresses, Rails and Accessories for Replacement Beds
Most long-term care beds ship as a frame with optional boards, rails and mattress. Because Medline accessories should not be used, plan rails and handles made for each new frame and a mattress sized to its deck width and length. We quote each bed as a complete setup so nothing is missing when it arrives.
- Hospital bed mattresses: foam, alternating pressure, low air loss and bariatric. See the mattress buying guide.
- Bed rails, assist handles and accessories for the bed you choose.
- Trapeze bars and overbed tables.
- Patient lifts, slings and stand assist devices.

Medline Bed Replacement FAQs
Can we keep using Medline beds until they are replaced?
Per Medline's notice, unplug the bed and any battery packs and do not use its electrical functions. The bed and mattress may stay in use in manual mode until the bed is replaced. Use electrical functions only in an emergency, never with an extension cord, and stop using bed accessories, including side rails.
Can Medline side rails or mattresses be used on a new bed?
Medline's notice says to stop using all accessories, including side rails, with Medline Brand beds. On a new bed, use the rails and accessories its manufacturer lists for that frame. We do not promise that Medline rails, pendants or mattresses fit another brand's bed, so we quote matching rails and a mattress sized to each new deck.
What is the best replacement bed for residents at risk of falls?
For fall risk, look at low and ultra-low beds. The Graham-Field AmeriLux Ultra Low lowers to 4 inches. The Joerns EasyCare, Invacare CS600 and Protekt Protopia Ultra Low lower to 7 inches. Pair a low bed with the fall-prevention accessories your care team uses, and confirm the rail plan with each manufacturer's guidance.
What replaces a Medline bariatric bed?
Bariatric options include the Protekt Protopia BARI EXP (750 lb capacity, 36, 42 or 48 inch width), the Joerns RC 750 and RC 1000 and the Invacare BAR750. For larger residents who do not need a full bariatric frame, the Invacare CS600 Expandable and Protekt Protopia EXP offer wider decks.
Is MedCare Mobility handling the Medline recall?
No. MedCare Mobility is an independent online medical equipment dealer and is not affiliated with Medline. We do not process Medline removals, credits or reimbursements; Medline and the distributor that supplied your beds handle those. We help facilities source and buy replacement beds, mattresses and rails.
Do you supply facilities nationwide and accept purchase orders?
Yes. MedCare Mobility ships to facilities across the U.S., including multi-site orders with each building's beds sent to its own address. We accept purchase orders on confirmed quotes and tax-exempt orders with a certificate. MedCare Mobility LLC is registered in SAM.gov (UEI ZW1FPMTY2WK8, CAGE 23P44).
How long will replacement beds take to arrive?
Lead times depend on the manufacturer and model, and they can change as demand rises. We confirm the current lead time for each bed with the manufacturer and put it on your written quote, so you can plan replacements room by room before you commit.
