Divided leg slings are the everyday workhorse for Hoyer lifts. Each leg gets its own padded strap that wraps under the thigh, so the sling is easy to put on while the person is sitting, and the open center makes toileting and hygiene care much easier. They’re also called U-slings or split leg slings. We carry them from Joerns Hoyer, Invacare, Graham-Field, Lumex and Proactive, from about $90 to $330, rated up to 850 lbs for bariatric use.

How to Pick a Divided Leg Sling

1. Does the person need head support?

If they can hold their head up, a standard U-sling is fine. If not, choose one with head support, like the Proactive padded sling, the Joerns Padded U Sling (optional head support) or the SURELIFT with full head support.

2. Match the sling to your lift

Loop slings fit most 2-, 4- and 6-point spreader bars. Clip slings, like the Joerns Professional 4-Point Clip Sling, attach to Hoyer clip cradles. The Joerns bariatric slings are made for the Hoyer Calibre and HPL700. If you own an Invacare lift, the Invacare divided leg sling is the natural match.

3. Size and weight

Size is about body width and back length, not clothing size. The Graham-Field padded sling, for example, lists Medium for about 99–210 lbs and Large for about 198–350 lbs. When in doubt, check the size chart on the product page or call us.

4. Padded, solid or mesh?

Padded slings are the most comfortable for bed and chair transfers. Mesh dries fast for bathing; see our Mesh Slings. For full toileting access, an open-bottom sling like the Lumex Padded Toileting Sling or our Commode & Toileting Slings work better.

Our take: for most home Hoyer lifts, a padded divided leg sling with head support is the safest all-round choice. The Proactive sling is the best value; the Joerns and Invacare slings are the pick if you own those lifts.

A divided leg sling goes on and comes off without rolling the person, which is why caregivers like it for seated transfers. What is a divided leg sling?

A divided leg sling is a Hoyer lift sling with two separate leg straps that wrap under each thigh, leaving the center open. It’s easy to put on while the person is sitting and makes toileting and hygiene care easier.

Is a divided leg sling the same as a U-sling?

Yes, mostly. U-sling, split leg sling and divided leg sling all describe the same shape: a back panel with two separate leg pieces. Some makers add head support or padding.

Who should use a divided leg sling?

It works for most people who are lifted with a Hoyer lift and can sit in the sling, especially for bed, chair, wheelchair and commode transfers. People with very little muscle tone, or who need to stay flat, often do better in a Full Body Slings sling.

Can you use a divided leg sling for toileting?

Yes, the open center allows some toileting access. For full access, an open-bottom toileting sling like the Lumex Padded Toileting Sling or a sling from our Commode & Toileting Slings is easier.

How do you put on a divided leg sling while sitting?

Slide the back of the sling down behind the person until the bottom edge is at the base of the spine. Then bring each leg strap under the thigh, cross them if the maker says to, and attach the loops to the spreader bar. Each product’s instructions show the exact steps.

Should the leg straps be crossed?

Many makers say to cross the leg straps under the thighs to stop the person sliding out, but it depends on the sling and the person. Follow the instructions that come with your sling.

Will a divided leg sling fit my Hoyer lift?

Most loop slings fit 2-, 4- and 6-point spreader bars from the major brands. Clip slings only fit clip cradles, and the Joerns bariatric slings are made for the Hoyer Calibre and HPL700. Send us your lift model and we’ll confirm.

What size divided leg sling do I need?

Go by the size chart on each product, which is based on body width, back length and weight, not clothing size. If someone falls between two sizes, most makers suggest the larger one.

What’s the weight limit on a divided leg sling?

Ours range from 400 lbs (Lumex toileting sling) to 600 lbs (Proactive, Joerns Padded U Sling) and 850 lbs for the Joerns Full Back Padded Bariatric sling. Always check the sling and the lift; the lower of the two is your limit.

How often should a lift sling be replaced?

Replace it as soon as you see fraying, tears, stretched loops or a label you can’t read. Slings used and washed every day wear out faster, so it’s smart to keep a spare.

Does Medicare cover Hoyer lift slings?

Medicare Part B may cover a patient lift sling as part of durable medical equipment when a doctor orders it for home use. We sell direct and don’t bill Medicare, but we can give you the product details your plan asks for.
