Description

Lumex Bariatric Transfer Bench – Wide Bathtub Transfer Bench with Reversible Backrest, 600 lb Capacity

The Lumex Bariatric Transfer Bench is a bariatric transfer bench for people who can’t safely step over the side of the bathtub. Two legs stand in the tub and two stand on the bathroom floor, so the user sits down outside the tub, slides across the seat and lifts their legs over the wall without ever standing on one foot. Graham-Field rates it for 600 lb, evenly distributed.

As a lumex bariatric transfer bench, it gives a bigger user real room: a blow-molded seat 26 3/4″ wide, a backrest 13″ tall, and an anodized aluminum frame that’s light, strong and rust-resistant. Drainage holes in the seat keep water from pooling under the user.

It’s also a wide transfer bench for bathtub set-ups on either side of the room. The backrest can be mounted facing either way, it attaches without tools, and the seat height adjusts from 16″ to 20″ in 1″ steps. Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty.

Why Choose the Lumex Bariatric Transfer Bench?

Stepping over a tub wall means balancing on one leg on a wet surface. That’s where a lot of bathroom falls happen, and it’s even harder for a heavier user with sore knees or hips. A transfer bench turns that step into a seated slide.

Most standard benches are rated for 300 to 400 lb. This one is rated for 600 lb, and the seat is built extra-deep for stability, according to Graham-Field. The frame is anodized aluminum, so it won’t rust in the tub, and the bench arrives assembled. We’re an authorized dealer and provider with fast nationwide shipping, delivered to your door. Want help measuring your tub first? Call us at 585-505-6665.

Who Is the Lumex Bariatric Transfer Bench Best For?

It’s built for:

  • Users up to 600 lb who need to sit to get in and out of a bathtub
  • People with knee, hip or balance problems who can’t lift a leg over the tub wall while standing
  • Wheelchair users who transfer onto the bench from the chair beside the tub
  • Caregivers who want the user seated for the whole bath
  • Bathrooms where the tub faucet is on either end, thanks to the reversible back

For a side-by-side look at benches, shower chairs and commode chairs, read our guide to types of bathroom and shower chairs for the elderly.

Who May Need a Different Bench?

This bench is about 29 1/2″ wide overall, so it needs a tub and the floor beside it to have room for all four legs. If the user weighs well under 400 lb and you’d like a seat with more cushion, the Lumex padded knock-down transfer bench (300 lb) has a padded seat and back. For a heavy-duty bench in between, look at the Lumex Imperial Collection transfer bench (400 lb). If the user walks into a stall shower without a tub wall, a shower chair is usually the simpler choice.

600 lb Weight Capacity

The bench and backrest are blow-molded plastic on an anodized aluminum frame, and Graham-Field rates the whole bench for 600 lb, evenly distributed. The user should sit centered on the seat, not on the outer edge. One point from Lumex’s instructions: the backrest isn’t designed to hold the user’s full weight, so don’t use it to lean back hard or to pull up on.

26 3/4″ Wide, Extra-Deep Seat with Drainage Holes

The seat is 26 3/4″ wide and 16 1/4″ deep, which gives a larger user space to slide across and sit square. Drainage holes in the seat let shower water run through so it doesn’t collect under the user while they wash.

16″ to 20″ Seat Height in 1″ Steps

Each of the four legs adjusts separately: press the button, slide the leg and let the button click into the hole you want. Set all four to the same height. The frame clears 14″ to 18″ underneath, depending on the setting, which is the number to compare with the height of your tub wall.

Reversible, Tool-Free Backrest

Before you set it up, decide which way the user will face when they sit in the tub. The backrest slides into four channel guides under the seat from either side, so it can go on the left or the right. It locks in with push buttons, no tools needed, and it comes attached from the factory.

Bariatric Transfer Bench vs. Imperial and Padded Transfer Benches

All three are Lumex tub transfer benches with a backrest and adjustable legs. The bariatric bench is the one for the heaviest users: 600 lb and a 26 3/4″ seat on an aluminum frame. The Imperial Collection bench is rated for 400 lb with a 28″ seat. The padded knock-down bench is rated for 300 lb and trades capacity for a cushioned seat and back. If the user is over 400 lb, the bariatric bench is the only one of the three to choose.

Common Problem → Bariatric Transfer Bench Solution

Problem: Mom is a bigger woman with bad knees. She’s stopped taking baths because lifting her leg over the tub wall feels unsafe, and the small shower stool her family bought creaks when she sits on it.

Solution: The bariatric bench straddles the tub wall. She sits down on the outside half, slides across the 26 3/4″ seat, and lifts one leg in, then the other. She has a backrest behind her, and the bench is rated for 600 lb.

“Will it fit our tub?” Measure the tub wall and the space beside the tub, then compare them with the 14″ to 18″ clearance under the frame and the 29 1/2″ overall width, or call us and we’ll check with you.

Sizing & Fit

  • Weight: up to 600 lb, evenly distributed.
  • Seat: 26 3/4″ wide and 16 1/4″ deep.
  • Seat height: 16″ to 20″, in 1″ steps.
  • Clearance under the frame: 14″ to 18″.
  • Overall size: 29 1/2″ wide and 20 1/2″ deep.
  • Backrest: 13″ above the seat.

How to Use It Safely

From a wheelchair, Lumex’s instructions say to park the chair next to the bench facing the front of the tub, lock the wheelchair, move your body onto the bench first and then lift your legs into the tub. From standing, sit on the outside half of the bench, hold the bench’s support arm, slide over and lift each leg in slowly. Reverse the order to get out: legs first, then your body. Anyone who needs help should not be left alone on the bench.

Care & Cleaning

Wash the bench with a mild soap and water solution, rinse it with clear water and dry it with a soft cloth. Don’t use organic solvents, abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. Check that all hardware is tight once a week, and replace any rubber leg tip that is torn, cracked, worn or missing before the next use.

What’s Included

The bench with its frame, legs and backrest, plus Lumex’s instructions. The backrest comes attached and can be moved to the other side without tools. It ships as one unit.

Bariatric Transfer Bench Warranty

Graham-Field lists a five (5) year limited warranty. Lumex’s instructions add that rubber tips and handgrips are covered for three (3) months. Call us at 585-505-6665 for the full terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lumex bariatric transfer bench?

It’s a heavy-duty tub transfer bench rated for 600 lb. Two legs go inside the tub and two stay outside, so the user sits down outside the tub and slides across instead of stepping over the wall.

How much weight does it hold?

Graham-Field rates it for 600 lb (272.16 kg), evenly distributed. The backrest is not meant to carry the user’s full weight.

How wide is the seat?

The seat is 26 3/4″ wide and 16 1/4″ deep. The bench is 29 1/2″ wide and 20 1/2″ deep overall.

What is the seat height?

The seat adjusts from 16″ to 20″ in 1″ steps. Set all four legs to the same height.

Will it fit over my tub wall?

The frame clears 14″ to 18″ underneath, depending on the height setting. Measure your tub wall and compare, or call us and we’ll help you check.

Can the backrest go on either side?

Yes. The back is reversible, so you can mount it on the left or right depending on which way the user faces in the tub. It attaches without tools.

Does it need to be assembled?

It comes assembled with the backrest attached. You only need to set the leg height and, if needed, move the back to the other side.

Will it rust?

The frame is anodized aluminum, which Graham-Field describes as lightweight, durable and rust-resistant. Rinse and dry it after use to keep it in good shape.

Does water drain off the seat?

Yes. The seat has drainage holes so water doesn’t pool under the user.

Does it have a commode opening or a padded seat?

No. It has a hard blow-molded plastic seat without a commode opening. For a cushioned seat, the Lumex padded knock-down transfer bench is the padded option, rated for 300 lb.

How do I clean it?

Use mild soap and water, rinse with clear water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, and check the hardware weekly.

What warranty does it have?

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty. Lumex’s instructions cover rubber tips and handgrips for three months, so ask us for the full terms.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
