Description
Low-Profile Air Cushion Support, SmartCell® Pressure Relief & Active Wheelchair Stability
The Vicair® Active O2 Low Wheelchair Cushion is a premium wheelchair air cushion designed for active wheelchair users who need pressure relief, skin protection, lateral stability, frontal stability, breathable comfort, and easier transfers. Built with a unique combination of ergonomically shaped foam and Vicair® SmartCells, the Active O2 Low provides targeted pressure reduction in the IT and coccyx area while maintaining a stable, responsive seating surface for everyday mobility.
Unlike basic foam cushions or standard static air cushions, the Vicair® Active O2 Low combines air-based pressure redistribution with a firm foam front section that helps make transfers easier, supports active movement, and improves wheelchair handling. The rear SmartCell compartments help offload the sitting bones and tailbone area, while the breathable and washable design supports hygiene, temperature regulation, and moisture control. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Whether you are searching for:
- ✔️ Wheelchair air cushions for daily use
- ✔️ An air cushion seat for wheelchair comfort
- ✔️ An air cushion for chair pressure relief
- ✔️ A breathable wheelchair cushion
- ✔️ A washable wheelchair cushion
- ✔️ A cushion for IT/coccyx pressure relief
- ✔️ A low-profile cushion for active users
the Vicair® Active O2 Low is built to support active wheelchair users who need comfort, stability, hygiene, pressure redistribution, and easy transfers in one advanced cushion system.
Why This Wheelchair Air Cushion Stands Out
The Vicair® Active O2 Low is not a powered alternating pressure system and not a simple foam pad. It is a low-profile air-cell cushion system that uses Vicair® SmartCells in rear compartments with ergonomic foam support in the front. This gives users a balanced combination of pressure relief and active stability.
✔️ Vicair® SmartCells reduce seated pressure
✔️ Four rear compartments support skin protection
✔️ Foam front helps easier transfers
✔️ Breathable design regulates heat and moisture
✔️ Machine washable for better hygiene
✔️ Stable support for active wheelchair users
✔️ Great lateral and frontal stability
✔️ Integrated mesh fabric for airflow
✔️ Fluid-resistant liner protects foam inlay
✔️ Storage pouch for personal belongings
Vicair® SmartCells for Pressure Relief & Skin Protection
The rear section of the Vicair® Active O2 Low uses Vicair® SmartCells arranged in four compartments. These air-filled SmartCells help provide comfort, skin protection, and pressure reduction in the IT and coccyx area.
The SmartCell compartments help:
- ✔️ Reduce pressure near the sitting bones
- ✔️ Reduce pressure near the coccyx area
- ✔️ Support skin protection during sitting
- ✔️ Improve seated comfort
- ✔️ Provide air-based pressure redistribution
- ✔️ Maintain a lightweight cushion feel
This makes the Active O2 Low especially useful for users who need an air cushion seat for wheelchair comfort but still want a stable and active seating surface.
Foam Front for Easier Transfers & Active Mobility
One of the biggest differences between the Active O2 Low and many other wheelchair air cushions is the foam front section. The foam front helps create a steadier surface for transfers and active wheelchair movement.
The foam front can help users who need:
- ✔️ Easier transfers in and out
- ✔️ More stable front support
- ✔️ Better wheelchair handling
- ✔️ A responsive seat surface
- ✔️ Support for active daily mobility
This makes the cushion especially helpful for active manual wheelchair users, users who transfer frequently, and users who need pressure relief without feeling unstable on a fully air-filled surface.
Low-Profile Design for Active Wheelchair Users
The Active O2 Low is designed as a lower-profile cushion option for users who want air-based pressure relief without excessive seat height increase. A lower profile can help maintain wheelchair fit, foot positioning, transfer ability, and daily mobility.
This is especially valuable for users who:
- ✔️ Foot propel or self-propel
- ✔️ Transfer often during the day
- ✔️ Need stable wheelchair handling
- ✔️ Want pressure relief without bulk
- ✔️ Need a cushion that supports activity
The combination of SmartCells and ergonomic foam helps balance immersion, comfort, and stability for active use. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Breathable, Washable & Built for Hygiene
The Vicair® Active O2 Low is built for daily use and easy maintenance. The cushion includes integrated mesh fabric and a foam inlay protected by an easy-to-clean fluid-resistant liner. The rest of the cushion is breathable and machine washable for hygiene, temperature regulation, and moisture management.
This helps support:
- ✔️ Better airflow
- ✔️ Temperature regulation
- ✔️ Moisture regulation
- ✔️ Cleaner daily use
- ✔️ Easier maintenance
- ✔️ Long-term hygiene
A breathable and washable wheelchair cushion can be especially important for users who sit for long periods, sweat easily, live in warmer climates, or need consistent hygiene support.
Lateral & Frontal Stability for Better Seating Control
The Active O2 Low is designed to provide strong lateral and frontal stability. This means the cushion supports side-to-side and front-facing seating control while still offering air-based comfort and pressure redistribution.
This helps users who need:
- ✔️ More seated control
- ✔️ Better lateral stability
- ✔️ Better frontal stability
- ✔️ Confidence during transfers
- ✔️ Stability during active wheelchair use
For active users, this stability can be just as important as pressure relief because a cushion that feels unstable may reduce confidence, mobility, and daily independence.
Compare Other Air & Pressure Relief Cushion Options
If you need a powered system that actively changes pressure points throughout the day, compare this cushion with the Proactive Alternating Pressure Seat Cushion. That option is best for users who need dynamic powered air therapy and rechargeable pump support.
If you need deeper adjustable air-cell immersion with independent air compartments for pelvic positioning and tissue protection, compare this cushion with the Proactive Medical Protekt® O2 Seat Cushion. That option is often better for users needing 2” or 4” adjustable air cells and more pressure redistribution control.
If you need gel-based pressure redistribution, coccyx relief, and cooling support instead of an air-cell cushion, compare this cushion with the Permobil M2 Wheelchair Cushion with Quadra3D® Gel.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Vicair Active O2 Low wheelchair cushion used for?
The Vicair Active O2 Low is used for pressure relief, skin protection, transfer stability, lateral stability, frontal stability, hygiene, and breathable daily wheelchair seating. It is designed especially for active wheelchair users who need air-based pressure redistribution without giving up stability.
Is the Vicair Active O2 Low considered a wheelchair air cushion?
Yes. The Active O2 Low is considered a wheelchair air cushion because it uses Vicair SmartCells to provide air-based pressure redistribution and skin protection, combined with ergonomically shaped foam for transfer support and stability.
How does the Vicair SmartCell system work?
Vicair SmartCells are small air-filled cells placed inside cushion compartments. In the Active O2 Low, the rear SmartCell compartments help reduce pressure around the IT and coccyx area while supporting comfort and skin protection during wheelchair sitting.
Who is the Vicair Active O2 Low best for?
It is best for active wheelchair users, manual wheelchair users, users who transfer often, and users who need pressure relief, breathability, washable hygiene, lateral stability, and frontal stability in a low-profile cushion.
Does this cushion help reduce pressure near the tailbone?
Yes. The four rear SmartCell compartments are designed to reduce pressure in the IT and coccyx area, which includes the sitting bones and tailbone region.
Is this cushion good for transfers?
Yes. The foam front section helps make transfers easier by providing a steadier front surface compared with many fully air-filled cushions.
Is the cushion machine washable?
Yes. The breathable cushion design is machine washable, while the foam inlay is protected by an easy-to-clean fluid-resistant liner. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for washing and drying.
Does this cushion help with heat and moisture buildup?
Yes. The Active O2 Low is breathable and designed for temperature and moisture regulation, which can help users stay more comfortable during long sitting periods.
Is this cushion better than a powered alternating pressure cushion?
It depends on the user’s needs. The Vicair Active O2 Low is better for active users who need stability, transfers, breathability, and non-powered air-cell pressure relief. A powered alternating pressure cushion may be better for users who need active pressure cycling throughout the day.
How is this different from the Protekt O2 air cushion?
The Vicair Active O2 Low combines SmartCells with a foam front for transfers and active stability. The Protekt O2 uses adjustable interconnected air cells and dual valve compartments for deeper immersion and independent side-to-side adjustment.
Is the Vicair Active O2 Low good for long sitting?
Yes. Its SmartCell compartments, breathable construction, and temperature/moisture regulation make it a strong option for users who sit for extended periods and need pressure relief with stability.
What is the benefit of the low-profile design?
A low-profile cushion can help maintain wheelchair fit, reduce seat-height changes, support easier transfers, improve foot positioning, and help active users maintain efficient wheelchair handling.

Helpful Tip:
The Vicair® Active O2 Low Wheelchair Cushion is best suited for active users who need a low-profile wheelchair air cushion with SmartCell pressure relief, transfer stability, breathability, and washable hygiene. For powered pressure cycling, compare the Proactive Alternating Pressure Seat Cushion; for deeper adjustable air-cell immersion, compare the Protekt® O2 Seat Cushion.
Vicair® Cushions
The basis of Vicair® technology is the tetrahedron shaped SmartCells that are filled with non-flowing air. Each cushion is filled with hundreds of these SmartCells that are virtually indestructible and require few adjustments. SmartCells conform to the body’s contours to provide pressure redistribution. Compartments are adjustable for individual and changing needs, even while seated. Stability is achieved as the cells do not migrate from the cushion’s compartments, move with minimal friction, resemble viscous fluid, and allow the cushion to adapt to the body.
