Description
Advanced Air Cushion Technology for Pressure Relief, Skin Protection & Postural Support
The Protekt® O2 Pressure Ulcer Prevention Cushion is an advanced therapeutic wheelchair seating system engineered for users who require superior pressure redistribution, adjustable positioning support, skin protection, and long-term seated comfort. Built with interconnected neoprene air cells, this highly specialized pressure relief seat cushion for wheelchair users helps distribute pressure evenly across the seating surface while reducing concentrated force around vulnerable areas such as the coccyx, pelvis, sacrum, and ischial tuberosities.
Unlike traditional foam wheelchair cushions that remain static under body weight, the Protekt® O2 uses adjustable air-cell immersion technology to help the body settle deeper into the cushion surface. This immersion allows pressure to spread more evenly while helping reduce localized stress that may contribute to pressure ulcers, skin irritation, and seated discomfort during prolonged wheelchair use.
The independently adjustable dual-compartment system also allows caregivers and users to fine-tune side-to-side positioning support, pelvic balance, and seating stability based on individual body shape and postural needs.
For users searching for:
- ✔️ A pressure ulcer prevention cushion
- ✔️ An air cushion for pressure sores
- ✔️ Advanced wheelchair cushions for pressure relief
- ✔️ A customizable air wheelchair cushion
- ✔️ Deep immersion pressure redistribution
- ✔️ Adjustable positioning support
- ✔️ Long-term wheelchair sitting comfort
the Protekt® O2 offers one of the most advanced combinations of pressure management, postural control, and adjustable air seating support available.
Why Pressure Redistribution Matters for Wheelchair Users
Users who spend many hours seated in a wheelchair often experience concentrated pressure around bony prominences such as the sitting bones and tailbone. Over time, prolonged pressure and reduced circulation can increase the risk of skin breakdown, discomfort, tissue damage, and pressure ulcer formation.
The Protekt® O2 cushion is specifically designed to help reduce those risks through interconnected air-cell immersion technology.
The large interconnected air cells help:
- ✔️ Redistribute seated pressure more evenly
- ✔️ Reduce concentrated force around vulnerable areas
- ✔️ Improve immersion and weight distribution
- ✔️ Support tissue protection and skin integrity
- ✔️ Enhance seated comfort during long sitting periods
- ✔️ Improve pressure management for higher-risk users
This makes the Protekt® O2 an excellent option for users who need more advanced pressure management than standard foam cushions can provide.
Adjustable Air Cells for Customized Pressure Relief
One of the biggest advantages of the Protekt® O2 is its adjustable air-cell system. The interconnected air cells can be inflated or adjusted based on the user’s body type, pressure relief needs, positioning goals, and comfort preferences.
The cushion is available with either:
- 2” Air Cells: Lower-profile immersion with easier transfers and wheelchair positioning.
- 4” Air Cells: Deeper immersion and enhanced pressure redistribution for users needing higher levels of tissue protection.
The included hand inflation pump allows the cushion to be customized for each individual user. Unlike fixed cushions, the Protekt® O2 can adapt to changing comfort needs and positioning requirements over time.
Dual Valve Compartments for Positioning & Pelvic Stability
The Protekt® O2 is divided into two independently adjustable air compartments. This dual-valve design allows each side of the cushion to be adjusted separately to help improve pelvic alignment, posture control, and side-to-side stability.
This can be especially helpful for users experiencing:
- ✔️ Pelvic obliquity
- ✔️ Sacral sitting
- ✔️ Leaning to one side
- ✔️ Postural asymmetry
- ✔️ Positioning instability
- ✔️ Poor seated balance
By independently adjusting each compartment, caregivers and users can create a more balanced and supportive seating environment while maintaining pressure redistribution benefits.
Designed for Long-Term Sitting & Pressure Sore Prevention
The Protekt® O2 is commonly selected for users who remain seated for extended periods each day and require advanced skin protection support. The deep immersion air-cell system helps create constant low-pressure distribution across the seating surface while minimizing concentrated loading.
This makes the cushion particularly beneficial for:
- ✔️ Users at moderate to high risk of pressure ulcers
- ✔️ Long-term wheelchair users
- ✔️ Homecare patients
- ✔️ Rehab and skilled nursing users
- ✔️ Users with skin integrity concerns
- ✔️ Bariatric users up to 500 lbs.
- ✔️ Users requiring pressure redistribution therapy
The breathable nylon cover also helps support airflow and seated comfort during prolonged wheelchair use.
Stable, Secure & Built for Daily Wheelchair Use
In addition to pressure redistribution, the Protekt® O2 is designed for practical daily wheelchair use.
Features include:
- ✔️ Breathable nylon cover
- ✔️ Non-skid cushion bottom
- ✔️ Safety straps for wheelchair securement
- ✔️ Flame-resistant neoprene construction
- ✔️ Latex-free materials
- ✔️ Included patch kit
- ✔️ Easy-to-use hand inflation pump
The non-skid base and safety straps help reduce unwanted cushion movement during transfers and wheelchair mobility.
Comparing Other Air & Pressure Relief Cushion Options
If you want a more breathable low-profile SmartCell cushion designed for active wheelchair users and easier transfers, compare the Protekt® O2 with the Vicair® Active O2 Low Wheelchair Air Cushion. That cushion combines SmartCell technology with ergonomic foam support for users needing active mobility and lateral stability.
If you need a powered system that continuously alternates pressure points throughout the day, compare this cushion with the Protekt Alternating Pressure Seat Cushion. That option may be better for users requiring active pressure cycling therapy and dynamic pressure redistribution.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Protekt® O2 wheelchair cushion used for?
The Protekt® O2 is designed for pressure redistribution, pressure ulcer prevention, skin protection, pelvic positioning support, and long-term wheelchair sitting comfort. It helps reduce concentrated pressure around the pelvis, coccyx, and sitting bones.
Is the Protekt® O2 good for preventing pressure sores?
Yes. The interconnected air-cell design helps redistribute pressure more evenly across the seating surface, which can help reduce pressure buildup associated with pressure sore formation and skin breakdown.
How does this air cushion help with pressure relief?
The interconnected air cells allow the body to immerse into the cushion, helping spread pressure across a larger surface area rather than concentrating force on vulnerable areas like the coccyx and ischials.
What is the difference between the 2” and 4” air cells?
The 2” air cell version provides a lower-profile seating surface with easier transfers, while the 4” version offers deeper immersion and more advanced pressure redistribution for higher-risk users.
Can the air pressure be adjusted?
Yes. The Protekt® O2 includes a hand inflation pump that allows users or caregivers to adjust the air-cell fill level for customized comfort, immersion, and positioning support.
What are dual valve compartments used for?
The dual valve compartments allow each side of the cushion to be adjusted independently. This helps improve pelvic alignment, side-to-side stability, and positioning control for users with asymmetrical seating needs.
Is this cushion good for pelvic obliquity or sacral sitting?
Yes. The independently adjustable compartments can help accommodate pelvic obliquity, sacral sitting, and positioning instability while maintaining pressure redistribution support.
Is the Protekt® O2 better than a foam wheelchair cushion?
For users needing advanced pressure redistribution and immersion, air-cell cushions like the Protekt® O2 generally provide more pressure management than standard foam cushions because they adapt continuously to body weight and movement.
Who should use an air cushion for pressure sores?
Users at moderate to high risk of pressure ulcers, users with skin integrity concerns, long-term wheelchair users, and individuals requiring advanced pressure redistribution often benefit from air cushions designed for pressure sore prevention.
Is the Protekt® O2 suitable for bariatric users?
Yes. The Protekt® O2 supports users up to 500 lbs., making it suitable for many bariatric seating applications requiring pressure redistribution and positioning support.
Does this wheelchair cushion help posture?
Yes. The cushion surrounds the pelvis and uses independently adjustable compartments to help improve posture control, seated balance, and pelvic stability.
What makes this different from an alternating pressure cushion?
The Protekt® O2 is a manually adjustable immersion air cushion, while alternating pressure cushions use powered pumps that continuously cycle pressure automatically throughout the day.
