Description
Medacure Mattress Extender – Foam Gap Filler That Adds 4″ to a Hospital Bed Mattress
The Medacure mattress extender is a 4″ foam piece that closes the gap between a hospital bed mattress and the headboard or footboard. It is 6″ high, covered in waterproof hospital grade nylon, and made in 36″, 42″ and 48″ widths to match standard and bariatric mattresses. Choosing a mattress too? Start with our hospital bed mattress buying guide and the medical mattress knowledge base.
Of all mattress extenders and gap fillers, a firm foam extender is the simplest fix when a bed has been lengthened to 84″ or an older 76″ mattress sits on an 80″ frame. It turns the open space into a continuous sleep surface so hands, feet and heads have nowhere to slip.
As a foam mattress extender for hospital bed use, it is built like a mattress: high density European foam, an anti shear surface and a detachable cover with a covered zipper. Questions about fit? Call us at 585-505-6665.
✅ Key Features
- ✔️ Adds 4″ of Mattress Length
- ✔️ Fills Head and Footboard Gaps
- ✔️ High Density European Foam
- ✔️ Waterproof Anti Microbial Cover
- ✔️ Anti Shear Surface, Covered Zipper
- ✔️ 36″, 42″ or 48″ Wide x 6″ High
Why Mattress Gaps Matter
Hospital bed frames and mattresses do not always match. A bed may be 84″ long for a tall patient while the mattress is 80″, or an older 76″ mattress may sit on an 80″ deck. The space left at the head or foot is called an entrapment gap. A patient can slide a hand, foot or even the head into it, especially when the head of the bed is raised and the body slides toward the foot. A firm foam piece that fills the space keeps the surface continuous from board to board, and it also keeps the mattress from shifting toward the open end.
Who Is It Best For?
- Beds extended from 80″ to 84″ for taller patients
- Older 76″ mattresses on 80″ home care or facility beds
- Bariatric beds with 42″ or 48″ wide mattresses
- Patients who slide toward the foot of the bed
- Facilities standardizing gap control across rooms
Not sure your mattress is the right size in the first place? Try the hospital bed mattress assessment tool.
Who May Need Something Else?
- Gaps along the side rails: a side rail gap filler such as the Protekt Rail Guard is made for that spot.
- A gap larger than 4″: the mattress is likely the wrong length; replace it with one that fits the deck.
- A worn mattress: an extender cannot fix a mattress that has bottomed out. See our hospital bed mattresses.
High Density European Foam
The extender is cut from the same kind of high density European foam Medacure uses in its hospital bed mattresses. It holds its shape under load, so it does not compress and reopen the gap when the patient’s feet rest on it.
Hospital Grade Cover
The 70 denier nylon cover has a PVC backing that keeps fluids out. It is waterproof, anti microbial and anti shear, so skin slides over it without dragging. The cover is detachable and the zipper is covered to protect the foam.
Sizes
| Medacure Item # | Width x Length x Height | Fits |
| ME3646 | 36″ x 4″ x 6″ | Standard 36″ hospital bed mattresses |
| ME4246 | 42″ x 4″ x 6″ | 42″ bariatric mattresses |
| ME4846 | 48″ x 4″ x 6″ | 48″ bariatric mattresses |
How to Measure the Gap
With the mattress pushed firmly against the headboard, measure the open space at the footboard at deck level. If it is about 4″, one extender fills it. Then measure the mattress width so the extender matches it edge to edge. Check again after raising and lowering the head of the bed, because some frames lengthen slightly as they articulate.
Pair It With the Right Mattress
The extender is 6″ high to match foam mattresses like the Medacure ProEx memory foam mattress. If you are replacing both, pick the mattress length that fits the deck first, then add the extender only where a gap remains.
Care
Wipe the cover with a mild disinfectant and let it dry before putting the sheet back on. Remove the cover and wash it if heavily soiled, following facility protocols. Replace the cover if it tears so the foam stays protected.
What’s Included

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a hospital bed mattress extender do?
It fills the gap between the end of the mattress and the headboard or footboard. Medacure’s extender adds 4″ of length, so an 80″ mattress fills an 84″ bed deck, or a 76″ mattress fills an 80″ deck. Closing that gap lowers the risk of an arm, leg or head slipping into it.
Which width do I need?
Match the extender to the width of the mattress: ME3646 for 36″ mattresses, ME4246 for 42″ bariatric mattresses and ME4846 for 48″ bariatric mattresses. All three are 4″ long and 6″ high.
Will it work with my mattress height?
The extender is 6″ high, the same height as most foam hospital bed mattresses, including the Medacure ProEx and Primex. On a thicker air mattress it still closes the gap at the deck, but the top will sit lower than the air surface.
Do I need an extender if my bed was lengthened?
Yes, usually. When a bed frame is extended from 80″ to 84″ with an extension kit, the mattress stays 80″ long and leaves a 4″ gap. A 4″ extender is the simple way to fill it.
Where should I place it, head or foot?
Most caregivers place it at the foot, where the gap is easiest to see and the patient’s feet rest. If the patient slides down often or the gap is at the head, place it at the headboard instead. It should sit snug against both the mattress and the board.
Is the cover waterproof?
Yes. It is a 70 denier nylon cover with PVC backing that is waterproof, anti microbial and easy to wipe clean. The cover is detachable and the zipper is covered.
Can I use more than one extender?
Medacure makes the extender as a 4″ piece. If the gap is larger than 4″, measure again, because a large gap usually means the mattress is the wrong length for the bed. Call us at 585-505-6665 and we will help you find the right fit.

Shipping & Returns
Shipping & Return Policy
At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.
Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.
Shipping & Order Processing
We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.
Processing Time
Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.
Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.
Transit & Delivery Time
Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.
Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.
Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas
Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.
Freight & Oversized Equipment
Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.
30-Day Return Policy
We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.
Eligible products generally include:
- Electric and power wheelchairs
- Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walkers and rollators
- Patient lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Hospital and homecare beds
- Eligible medical mattresses
- Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
- Overbed tables
- Bathroom benches and shower chairs
- Other eligible medical and mobility equipment
Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.
Return Authorization
Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.
You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.
Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.
Condition of Returned Merchandise
To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:
- In brand-new and unused condition
- In its complete original manufacturer packaging
- With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
- Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
- In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer
We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.
Restocking Fees
Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.
These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.
If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.
Return Shipping & Shipping Charges
The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.
Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.
Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.
Non-Returnable Products
For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.
We currently do not accept returns on:
- Parts & accessories
- Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
- Patient lift slings
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page
If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.
If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.
Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.
If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.
Refused Deliveries
Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.
A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.
Return Shipping Deadline
Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.
This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.
The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.
If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.
Custom & Made-to-Order Products
Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.
For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.
If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.
Questions Before Ordering?
Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.
Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.
For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
