Bed Rails: Full, Half or Quarter

Full-length rails

A full rail runs most of the bed’s length and gives the most protection against rolling out. The Invacare Reduced Gap Full Length Rails fit Invacare 5310VC, 5310IVC, 5410IVC and 5410LOW beds, the Invacare G-Series Full-Length Rail bolts to the G-Series bed, and the Lumex Liberty Full-Length Rail is made for the Patriot and WhisperLite II. The Proactive Full-Length Side Rails are a lower-cost pair that fits most hospital and home care frames.

Half and quarter rails

Half rails cover the upper body and leave the foot end open, so getting in and out is easier. Good picks: the Invacare Clamp-On Half-Length Rail (no tools, Invacare IVC beds), the Joerns F18AL SoftCare half rails for the EasyCare, the Lumex Liberty Half No-Gap Rail and the 18-inch Lumex Liberty Quarter Rail for Patriot and WhisperLite II beds.

Assist handles and bed handles

An assist handle is a short grab bar for sitting up and standing, not a fall barrier. Joerns makes them for its own beds: the F026AL Pivoting Assist Handle (our best seller) and F028 Deluxe Assist Handle fit UltraCare XT, EasyCare 5, 7, 9 and UltraCare 700 beds. The Stander EZ Click LTC Bed Handle set clamps to metal hospital and long-term care frames and holds 500 lbs. For a regular home bed, the Stander Prime Bed Handle, Stander Prime Safety Bed Rail and Stander Wonder Mobility Bed Rail slide under the mattress. On a wooden adjustable base, choose the Stander Wonder Click or Click Extendable Bed Rail.

Rails Have to Fit the Bed and the Mattress

This is the part people skip. If a rail doesn’t match the bed, or the mattress is narrower or softer than the bed was made for, gaps open up between the mattress, the rail and the headboard, and a head or arm can get caught in them. Buy rails made for your bed model, use a mattress that fills the deck, and check the gaps after every change. Reduced-gap and no-gap rails, like the Invacare Reduced Gap Full Length Rails and the Lumex Liberty Half No-Gap (which closes the gap between the headboard and the rail end), are built to keep those spaces small. Will these rails fit my bed?

Only if they’re made for your bed. Each product page (and our Comparison tab) lists the beds its maker says it fits, like Invacare IVC, Joerns EasyCare or Patriot. If your bed isn’t listed, call 585-505-6665 with the make and model and we’ll check before you order.

Should I get full rails or half rails?

Full rails if the person might roll out of bed, half rails if they mostly need help sitting up and getting out. Half rails leave the foot end open, so the person can get up without climbing over the rail. Quarter rails and assist handles are for standing support, not fall protection.

Are bed rails safe?

Yes, when the rail is made for the bed and the mattress fills the frame. The risk is the gaps: a rail that doesn’t match the bed, or a mattress that’s too narrow or soft, can leave spaces where a head or arm gets caught. Use rails built for your bed model, check the gaps after setup, and add a gap filler like the Protekt Rail Guard if you see one.

What’s the difference between an assist handle and a bed rail?

An assist handle is a short bar to hold while sitting up or standing; a bed rail is a barrier that keeps someone from rolling out. Handles like the Joerns F026AL or Stander EZ Click LTC Bed Handle don’t stop falls, so choose a half or full rail if falling out of bed is the worry.

Do you sell replacement parts for my hospital bed?

For some beds, yes. We stock the headspring, low bed end and extender kit for Invacare 5310IVC, 5410IVC and 5410LOW beds, plus Basic American kits for Matrix and Zenith beds. If you don’t see your part, call us with the bed model.

Can I put a bed rail on a regular home bed?

Yes, but use a rail made for home beds. The Stander Prime Safety Bed Rail, Prime Bed Handle and 30-Inch Safety Bed Rail slide under the mattress of a traditional bed. For a wooden adjustable base, the Stander Wonder Click or Click Extendable Bed Rail are the ones made for it.

How do I make a hospital bed longer for a tall person?

Add an extension kit for the frame and a bolster or foam extension for the mattress. The Invacare Extender Kit takes IVC beds from 80″ to 84″, the Basic American kit takes its beds from 84″ to 88″, and the Lumex 4″ foam extension fills the gap when an 80″ mattress sits on an 84″ frame.

What accessories go with Basic American Matrix and Zenith beds?

The trapeze adaptor, side wall bumper and edema foot ratchet kit are made for the Matrix 6200 and Zenith 7200, and the extension kit, under-bed light, USB power supply, IV socket and bed cart are listed for all Basic American beds. Assist devices come fixed, pivoting or counter-rotating.

Can I buy just the pump or just the mattress for my air mattress system?

How much weight can a bed handle hold?

It depends on the model, so check the rating before you buy. The Stander EZ Click LTC Bed Handle is rated 500 lbs, the Stander Prime rail and handle 400 lbs, and the Stander Click rails and Karman rails 300 lbs.

Does Medicare cover bed rails?

Medicare may cover some bed rails as part of a covered hospital bed setup when a doctor orders it. Coverage depends on the plan. We sell direct and don’t bill insurance, but we’ll give you the product details your plan asks for.
