Description
Lumex Lightest Foam/Gel Overlay – Foam Gel Mattress Overlay in 36″ x 80″, 36″ x 84″ and 42″ x 80″
The Lumex Lightest is a foam gel mattress overlay: a thin, light pad that goes on top of the mattress you already have to add pressure management and comfort. It’s built in layers. A 2″ high-density foam base has non-migrating gel engineered into it, and a 1″ convoluted (egg-crate style) foam layer sits on top. A zip-off cover wraps the whole thing.
Graham-Field says the Lightest overlays are made to reduce body interface pressure and to be comfortable for a wide range of body shapes and sizes. It’s a simple, no-power gel mattress overlay: nothing to plug in, no pump and nothing to set.
It comes in three sizes. Use the dropdown above to pick 36″ x 80″ for a standard hospital bed overlay, 36″ x 84″ for an extended-length bed, or the 4″ thick 42″ x 80″ for a wider bed and heavier users.
Why Choose the Lumex Lightest Overlay?
It’s the easy upgrade. The overlay is light enough for one person to handle, it lays right on top of the existing mattress, and there’s no pump or power cord. The gel is non-aqueous, so it won’t pool, migrate or leak, and the cover unzips for cleaning. Graham-Field’s product sheet marks it Made in USA.
Who Is the Lumex Lightest Overlay Best For?
The Lightest overlay is a good fit for:
- People who spend extra time in bed and find their current mattress too firm or uncomfortable
- Families who want added comfort on a home hospital bed without buying a new mattress
- Caregivers who need something light to lift, turn and clean
- Beds with a 36″ x 80″, 36″ x 84″ or 42″ x 80″ mattress
- Users up to 275 lb on the 36″ sizes, or up to 400 lb on the 42″ size

Who May Need a Different Surface?
- Users over 400 lb: the largest size is rated for 400 lb. Call us for a bariatric mattress.
- Users over 275 lb on a 36″ bed: the 36″ sizes are rated for 275 lb. Choose the 42″ size if the bed is 42″ wide, or call us.
- Anyone whose care team has asked for a powered surface: an overlay doesn’t alternate or move air. See the Graham-Field Alternating Pressure Pad (APP) Mattress Overlay or our Medical Bed Mattresses.
- Beds without a usable mattress: an overlay needs a mattress under it. If the old mattress is sagging or damaged, replace it instead.
2″ Foam Base With Built-In Gel
The base is 2″ (5.1 cm) of high-density foam with a viscoelastic gel engineered into it to help with pressure management. Graham-Field says the gel is non-aqueous and won’t migrate, pool or leak, so it stays where it’s needed instead of sliding to the low spots.
1″ Convoluted Foam Top Layer
On top is a 1″ (2.5 cm) convoluted foam layer, the familiar egg-crate pattern, for comfort where the body meets the surface.
Zip-Off Cover That Wipes Clean
The cover is fluid resistant, anti-static and flame retardant, and GF lists antimicrobial properties that help with infection control (bacteria resistant, anti-fungal and non-allergenic). A zipper makes it easy to take off, and it’s made to be easy to clean and maintain.
Choosing Your Options
There’s one dropdown: Size. Match the overlay to the mattress it will sit on. Measure the top of the mattress side to side and head to foot; the overlay should cover it without hanging over the edges.
| Size | Best for | Thickness | Weight (GF) | Weight capacity (GF) | Graham-Field code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36″ x 80″ | Standard hospital bed mattress | 3″ | 26 lb | 275 lb | 103680 |
| 36″ x 84″ | Extended-length (84″) bed | 3″ | 26 lb | 275 lb | 103684 |
| 42″ x 80″ | Wider bed, heavier users | 4″ | 34 lb | 400 lb | 104280 |
How to pick: most home hospital beds use a 36″ x 80″ mattress. If the bed has been extended for a tall user, pick 36″ x 84″. If the mattress is 42″ wide, or the user is over 275 lb, pick the 42″ x 80″, which is also 1″ thicker. Not sure what you have? Call us at 585-505-6665 with the bed model.
Lumex Lightest vs. an Alternating Pressure Pad
The Lightest is a passive overlay: foam and gel, no power, nothing to adjust. An alternating pressure pad uses a pump to inflate and deflate air cells in turn. The Lightest is quieter, lighter and simpler, and it works anywhere. If the care team specifically wants a powered, alternating surface, look at the Graham-Field Alternating Pressure Pad (APP) Mattress Overlay instead. Our Ultimate Guide to Pressure Relief Mattresses explains the differences.
Common Problem → Lumex Lightest Solution
Problem: Mom’s home hospital bed came with a firm mattress. She’s in bed a lot more since her surgery and says her hips and heels ache by morning, but the mattress itself is in good shape.
Solution: A 36″ x 80″ Lightest overlay goes right on top. The 1″ convoluted foam and gel-infused base give her a softer surface, and there’s no pump to listen to at night.
“Will the sheets still fit?” The 36″ sizes add 3″ of height (the 42″ adds 4″), so deeper fitted sheets may be easier to put on.
Sizing & Fit
- Mattress size: pick the overlay that matches the mattress top: 36″ x 80″, 36″ x 84″ or 42″ x 80″.
- Added height: 3″ on the 36″ sizes, 4″ on the 42″ size. The sleeping surface sits that much higher relative to the side rails, so check rail height with your care team.
- Weight capacity: 275 lb (36″ sizes) or 400 lb (42″ size), per Graham-Field.
- Handling: about 26 lb (36″ sizes) or 34 lb (42″ size).
Care & Cleaning
Unzip the cover to take it off. GF describes the cover as easy to clean and maintain; ask us for Graham-Field’s cleaning guidance before using strong disinfectants.
Returns
Graham-Field lists this overlay as non-returnable, so please measure the mattress before you order. If you’re not sure which size you need, call us first at 585-505-6665.
Warranty
Graham-Field doesn’t list a warranty for this overlay on the pages we have. Ask us for the current warranty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lumex Lightest overlay?
It’s a non-powered foam and gel mattress overlay from Lumex. It sits on top of an existing mattress and adds a 2″ gel-infused foam base and a 1″ convoluted foam top under a zip-off cover.
Does it replace my mattress?
No. It goes on top of the mattress you already have. If your mattress is worn out or sagging, replace the mattress instead.
Which size should I order?
Match the top of your mattress: 36″ x 80″ for most home hospital beds, 36″ x 84″ for an extended-length bed, or 42″ x 80″ for a wider bed. Call us at 585-505-6665 if you’re unsure.
How much weight does it hold?
Graham-Field rates the 36″ x 80″ and 36″ x 84″ sizes for 275 lb and the 42″ x 80″ size for 400 lb, evenly distributed.
How thick is it?
The 36″ sizes are 3″ thick (2″ foam base plus 1″ convoluted top). The 42″ x 80″ size is 4″ thick.
Will the gel leak or move around?
No. Graham-Field says the gel is non-aqueous and engineered into the foam base, so it won’t migrate, pool or leak.
Does it need electricity?
No. There’s no pump or cord. It works on its own as soon as you lay it on the mattress.
Can I take the cover off to wash it?
Yes. The cover comes off with a zipper. It’s fluid resistant and made to be easy to clean; ask us for GF’s cleaning guidance before using strong chemicals.
How heavy is the overlay?
About 26 lb for the 36″ sizes and 34 lb for the 42″ size, so one caregiver can usually handle it.
Can I use it on a regular home bed?
It’s sized for hospital bed mattresses. If your home mattress top measures one of these sizes it will fit, but a twin or full bed usually won’t match. Measure first or call us.
Can I return it if it doesn’t fit?
Graham-Field lists this overlay as non-returnable, so please measure your mattress before ordering and call us with any size questions.
Is the overlay made in the USA?
Graham-Field’s product sheet marks the Lightest overlay Made in USA.

Shipping & Returns
Shipping & Return Policy
At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.
Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.
Shipping & Order Processing
We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.
Processing Time
Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.
Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.
Transit & Delivery Time
Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.
Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.
Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas
Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.
Freight & Oversized Equipment
Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.
30-Day Return Policy
We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.
Eligible products generally include:
- Electric and power wheelchairs
- Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walkers and rollators
- Patient lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Hospital and homecare beds
- Eligible medical mattresses
- Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
- Overbed tables
- Bathroom benches and shower chairs
- Other eligible medical and mobility equipment
Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.
Return Authorization
Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.
You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.
Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.
Condition of Returned Merchandise
To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:
- In brand-new and unused condition
- In its complete original manufacturer packaging
- With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
- Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
- In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer
We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.
Restocking Fees
Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.
These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.
If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.
Return Shipping & Shipping Charges
The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.
Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.
Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.
Non-Returnable Products
For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.
We currently do not accept returns on:
- Parts & accessories
- Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
- Patient lift slings
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page
If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.
If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.
Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.
If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.
Refused Deliveries
Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.
A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.
Return Shipping Deadline
Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.
This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.
The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.
If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.
Custom & Made-to-Order Products
Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.
For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.
If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.
Questions Before Ordering?
Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.
Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.
For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
