Joerns 42″ x 80″ Width Extension Kit – Hospital Bed Width Extension Hardware for the UltraCare XT, EasyCare and WeCare Beds
This Joerns kit is a hospital bed width extension: the hardware that takes a 35″ wide Joerns sleep deck out to 42″ on an 80″ bed. It is not a bed and it’s hardware only, with no head or foot panels. There are two kits, one for the Joerns UltraCare XT frame (COMFEXT-XT4280) and one for the Joerns EasyCare or Joerns WeCare frame (COMFEXT-ECS4280), and you pick yours from the Bed Frame dropdown.
Joerns lists a 42″ width accessory for all three beds. The UltraCare XT spec sheet calls it “Fixed Width Accessory: 42″,” the EasyCare spec sheet lists “Fixed Width Accessory*: 42″,” and the WeCare spec sheet lists “Optional: CareWide Accessory 39″ (TwinXL) and 42″.” A wider deck means more room for a larger person and more room to reposition someone without the caregiver reaching across a narrow bed.
Because this bed width extender kit is hardware only, you’ll also want 42″ head and foot panels and a 42″ wide Joerns mattress to finish the wider bed. Call us at 585-505-6665 and we’ll put the full set together for your bed.
Why Choose the Joerns Width Extension Kit?
If you already own a Joerns UltraCare XT, EasyCare or WeCare and the 35″ deck has become too narrow, this is Joerns’ own way to widen it rather than buying a bariatric bed or renting one. Joerns designs its width extension as an accessory on all three frames, and the kit is specific to the frame you have, so it fits the way Joerns intended. We’re an authorized Joerns dealer and provider, and it ships fast nationwide.
Who Is This Width Extension Kit Best For?
The 42″ kit is a good fit for:
- Owners of a Joerns UltraCare XT, EasyCare or WeCare bed with the standard 35″ x 80″ deck
- Larger residents who need more sleep surface than a 35″ bed gives
- Caregivers who reposition someone in bed and want the extra room to do it
- Facilities that would rather widen an existing Joerns bed than add a specialty bed
Still choosing the bed? Our Hospital Bed Knowledge Base and Hospital Bed Buying Guide cover the Joerns beds we carry, or call us at 585-505-6665.
Who May Need a Different Kit?
Joerns’ EasyCare manual is clear on one case: “Do not apply any width expansion accessory kit to a Joerns bed equipped with the Care-Fit integrated width expansion feature.” If your EasyCare already slides out to 39″ or 42″ on its own, you don’t need this kit and shouldn’t add it. If you have an 84″ or 88″ extended bed, a 39″ setup, or a bed from another brand, call us before ordering; this listing covers the 42″ x 80″ kits only.
Choosing Your Options
There’s one dropdown: Bed Frame. The kit is built for a specific Joerns frame, so pick the bed you own.
| Bed Frame | Joerns code | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| UltraCare XT frame | COMFEXT-XT4280 | Joerns UltraCare XT (model UCXT) only |
| EasyCare or WeCare frame | COMFEXT-ECS4280 | Joerns EasyCare (model ECS) or Joerns WeCare |
Both kits are 42″ x 80″ and hardware only. The bed’s model is on the ID label on the frame under the foot section of the sleep deck. If you’re not sure which bed you have, call us with what the label says.
42″ Wide Deck on an 80″ Bed
All three beds ship with a 35″ x 80″ sleep surface (Joerns: UltraCare XT “35” x 80″ Sleep Surface,” EasyCare “Fixed Width 35″ x 80″,” WeCare “Standard: 35″”). This kit takes the mattress support platform out to 42″ and keeps the 80″ length. For an 84″ or 88″ bed, call us first.
Hardware Only, No Panels
Joerns sells this kit as hardware only. The 42″ head and foot panels are a separate purchase, and Joerns’ own UltraWide literature notes that a standard head panel used with the wider deck does not meet the entrapment guidelines the way the matching wide panel does. Plan on the panels; we can quote them with the kit.
Use a 42″ Wide Joerns Mattress
Joerns’ EasyCare manual says that with an add-on CareWide kit, “Joerns Healthcare recommends the use of a mattress with a minimum width of 39 inches for a 39 inch setting and 42 inches for 42 inch setting,” and that the mattress length should match the platform. A 35″ mattress on a 42″ deck leaves a gap at the sides, which is exactly what the manual warns against. We carry Joerns mattresses in 42″ x 80″; ask us when you order.
Joerns Width Kit vs. a Bariatric Bed
A bariatric bed is the answer when the person’s weight is beyond what the bed is rated for. The width kit is the answer when the weight is fine and the deck is simply too narrow. Joerns rates the UltraCare XT at 650 lb, the EasyCare at 600 lb and the WeCare at 450 lb safe working load, and each manual says that figure includes accessories and options. If the capacity works, the kit is the simpler, cheaper path to a wider bed.
Common Problem → Joerns Width Kit Solution
Problem: A larger resident keeps ending up against the assist rails on a 35″ bed, and turning them takes two caregivers leaning over the frame.
Solution: Fit the 42″ width kit for that frame, add 42″ panels and a 42″ mattress, and the same bed gives seven more inches of room to sleep and to reposition.
“Can I add this to a bed I already own?” Yes. Joerns sells the width extension as an accessory for all three frames, so it can go on a bed that’s already in service.
Sizing & Fit
Confirm three things before you order: the bed model on the ID label (UCXT, ECS or WeCare), that the bed is the 80″ length, and that it doesn’t already have Joerns’ Care-Fit integrated width. After installing, the manuals ask you to make sure the mattress fills the full width between the mattress stops and that the bed runs through its full range without anything binding.
Care & Cleaning
Follow the bed’s user manual for cleaning. As general guidance, wipe painted steel bed hardware with a mild disinfectant and dry it; don’t use abrasives or pressure washers.
What’s Included
The width extension hardware for the frame you pick. No panels, no mattress and no rails are included. Installation instructions come with the kit; Joerns Technical Support (800-826-0270) can help with install questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a bed?
No. It’s the hardware that widens the sleep deck of a Joerns UltraCare XT, EasyCare or WeCare bed from 35″ to 42″. You need one of those beds to use it.
Which kit do I pick?
Pick your bed frame in the dropdown. COMFEXT-XT4280 is for the UltraCare XT only; COMFEXT-ECS4280 is for the EasyCare or the WeCare. The model is on the ID label under the foot section of the deck.
Does it include the head and foot panels?
No. Joerns sells this kit as hardware only. The 42″ panels are separate, and we can quote them with the kit.
Do I need a new mattress?
Yes, a wider one. Joerns’ EasyCare manual recommends a mattress at least 42″ wide for the 42″ setting, with the length matched to the platform. We carry Joerns 42″ x 80″ mattresses.
Will it fit an EasyCare that already slides out to 42″?
No, and Joerns says not to add it. The EasyCare manual warns not to apply any width expansion accessory kit to a bed equipped with the Care-Fit integrated width feature.
Does the kit change the bed’s weight capacity?
Joerns doesn’t publish a separate rating for the kit. Each bed’s manual says its safe working load includes accessories and options, so the bed’s own rating still applies.
Does it fit the 84″ or 88″ bed?
This listing is the 42″ x 80″ kit. If your bed has a length extension, call us at 585-505-6665 before ordering and we’ll check the right part with Joerns.
Is there a 39″ version?
Joerns lists 39″ width options for the EasyCare and WeCare, but this listing is the 42″ kit only. Call us if you need 39″.
Can I add it to a bed I already own?
Yes. Joerns sells the width extension as an accessory on all three frames, so it can be added to a bed that’s already in use.
How does it install?
Follow the instructions supplied with the kit for your frame, then run the bed through its full range to make sure nothing binds and the mattress fills the width between the stops. Joerns Technical Support at 800-826-0270 can help.
Will my existing assist rails still work?
That depends on the rail and the panel. Joerns’ UltraWide literature pairs the wider deck with the matching wide head panel to keep the bed within entrapment guidelines. Tell us which rails you have and we’ll confirm.
What is the warranty?
Ask us for the current Joerns warranty terms on this accessory.

Shipping & Returns
Shipping & Return Policy
At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.
Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.
Shipping & Order Processing
We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.
Processing Time
Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.
Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.
Transit & Delivery Time
Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.
Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.
Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas
Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.
Freight & Oversized Equipment
Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.
30-Day Return Policy
We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.
Eligible products generally include:
- Electric and power wheelchairs
- Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walkers and rollators
- Patient lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Hospital and homecare beds
- Eligible medical mattresses
- Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
- Overbed tables
- Bathroom benches and shower chairs
- Other eligible medical and mobility equipment
Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.
Return Authorization
Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.
You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.
Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.
Condition of Returned Merchandise
To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:
- In brand-new and unused condition
- In its complete original manufacturer packaging
- With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
- Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
- In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer
We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.
Restocking Fees
Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.
These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.
If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.
Return Shipping & Shipping Charges
The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.
Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.
Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.
Non-Returnable Products
For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.
We currently do not accept returns on:
- Parts & accessories
- Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
- Patient lift slings
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page
If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.
If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.
Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.
If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.
Refused Deliveries
Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.
A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.
Return Shipping Deadline
Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.
This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.
The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.
If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.
Custom & Made-to-Order Products
Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.
For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.
If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.
Questions Before Ordering?
Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.
Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.
For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
