Description
Lumex Wood Transfer Board – Solid Wood Slide Board With 1 or 2 Handles, 24″ to 32″ Long
A transfer board is a simple bridge. One end goes under the person’s thigh, the other rests on the surface they’re moving to, and they slide across in small scoots instead of standing up and turning. Lumex designed this one to help with transfers between a wheelchair, bed, commode or chair.
This wooden transfer board is solid wood with a lacquer-coated finish so it slides smoothly, and both ends are tapered so it’s easier to slip under the thigh. Lumex makes it in five versions, picked from the dropdown above: 24″ or 30″ long and 8″ wide with one or two handles, or a 32″ x 10″ heavy-duty board with two handles.
The four 8″-wide boards are rated for 440 lb. The 32″ x 10″ wood transfer board with handles is rated for 735 lb, evenly distributed. A board is a tool, not a lift: it works when the person has some sitting balance and upper-body strength, ideally with a caregiver beside them.
Why Choose the Lumex Wood Transfer Board?
Wood is the classic choice for a reason: it’s stiff, it doesn’t flex under weight, and the lacquer finish gives a smooth, predictable slide. The handles give the user or the caregiver something to grip when placing and removing the board, and the tapered ends slide under the thigh without a struggle. Five sizes mean you can match the board to the gap you actually need to cross.
Who Is the Lumex Transfer Board Best For?
A wood transfer board is a good fit for:
- Wheelchair users moving to and from a bed, a commode, a car seat or another chair
- People who can sit up on their own but shouldn’t stand and pivot
- Caregivers who want a simple, low-cost way to help with sideways transfers
- Users up to 440 lb (8″-wide boards) or up to 735 lb (32″ x 10″ board)
Comparing transfer aids? Our Guide to Patient Transfer Equipment walks through boards, benches and lifts.
Who May Need Something Different?
- People who can’t sit up or bear any weight: a board still needs the person to sit and shift. A patient lift is safer; see our Patient Lift Knowledge Base.
- Getting in and out of a bathtub: a bath transfer bench lets the user sit and slide over the tub wall.
- Users over 735 lb: call us for bariatric transfer options.
- Moving someone longer distances: a board covers a short gap. To push someone between rooms, look at transfer chairs for elderly users.
Solid Wood With a Lacquer-Coated Finish
The board is solid wood, and Lumex coats it in lacquer for a smooth transfer. Keep it clean and dry, and check it for cracks or rough spots before each use.
Tapered Ends Slide Under the Thigh
Both ends are tapered, so the board slips under the thigh with less lifting and less tugging on skin and clothing.
Choosing Your Options
There’s one dropdown: Size & Handles. Two things to decide: how long (and wide) the board needs to be, and if you want one handle or two.
| Size | Handles | Weight capacity | Graham-Field code |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24″ L x 8″ W | 1 | 440 lb | 5241-24A-1 |
| 30″ L x 8″ W | 1 | 440 lb | 5241-30A-1 |
| 24″ L x 8″ W | 2 | 440 lb | 5242-24A-1 |
| 30″ L x 8″ W | 2 | 440 lb | 5242-30A-1 |
| 32″ L x 10″ W | 2 | 735 lb | 5242-32A-1 |
Length (the gap you need to bridge): the board has to rest securely on both surfaces with room to slide, so measure the gap between them and leave plenty of board on each side. A 24″ board suits close, side-by-side transfers, like a wheelchair parked right next to a bed or commode. A 30″ board covers a wider gap, such as a wheelchair to a car seat, where you can’t get the two seats as close. The 32″ x 10″ board is the longest and the widest, with the 735 lb rating, for larger users or anyone who wants more board under them.
1 handle vs. 2 handles: the handles are hand-holds for placing, steadying and pulling out the board. Two handles let you grab it from either end, which helps when transfers go both ways (bed to chair, then chair back to bed) or when a caregiver works from either side. One handle is a simpler board when you always set it up from the same side.
Not sure which one? Call us at 585-505-6665 and tell us where the transfers happen.
Using a Transfer Board Safely
- Get instruction from the user’s therapist or care team before the first transfer, and practice with a caregiver beside you.
- Lock the wheelchair brakes. Move or remove the armrest and footrest on the transfer side.
- Get both surfaces as close together and as close to the same height as you can.
- Slide the tapered end well under the thigh, with the other end resting firmly on the surface you’re moving to.
- Move in small scoots, pushing with the hands. Don’t try to lift up and over in one go.
- Keep fingers off the edges, where they can get pinched under the body.
- Remove the board once the person is settled.
The board helps with the slide; it doesn’t replace good technique or a second pair of hands.
Wood Transfer Board vs. a Bath Transfer Bench
A transfer board is portable and works anywhere there are two surfaces side by side: bed, wheelchair, commode, car. A bath transfer bench stays in the tub and gives the user a seat to slide across into the bathtub. Many families use both. See our Bath Transfer Benches.
Common Problem → Lumex Transfer Board Solution
Problem: Dad uses a wheelchair since his stroke. He sits up fine, but getting him from the chair to the bed takes two people lifting under his arms, and everybody’s back hurts.
Solution: With the chair locked beside the bed and the armrest off, a 24″ two-handle board bridges the short gap. Dad scoots across in a few short pushes while one caregiver steadies him.
“Can we use the same board for the car?” If the gap from the wheelchair to the car seat is wider, the 30″ board gives more reach. Measure both gaps before you choose.
Care & Cleaning
Wipe the board with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it. Don’t soak the wood. Stop using it if you see cracks, splinters or wear in the finish.
Warranty
Graham-Field doesn’t list a warranty for the transfer boards on the pages we have. Ask us for the current warranty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a wood transfer board used for?
It bridges the gap between two seats so a person can slide across instead of standing up. Lumex designed this one for transfers between a wheelchair, bed, commode or chair.
Which size should I get?
Measure the gap between the two surfaces. The 24″ board suits close, side-by-side transfers, the 30″ reaches across a wider gap, and the 32″ x 10″ is the longest and widest, with a 735 lb rating.
What’s the difference between 1 and 2 handles?
Two handles give a grip at both ends, which helps when you transfer in both directions or work from either side. One handle is enough if you always set up from the same side.
How much weight does it hold?
Graham-Field rates the 24″ and 30″ boards (8″ wide) for 440 lb and the 32″ x 10″ board for 735 lb, evenly distributed.
Is a transfer board safe without a caregiver?
Some people use a board on their own after training, but it’s safest to learn with a therapist and have a caregiver beside you until transfers are steady. Lock the wheelchair brakes every time.
Can I use it to get into the car?
Yes, it can bridge from a wheelchair to a car seat. That gap is often wider, so the 30″ or 32″ board usually works better than the 24″.
Can I use it in the bathtub?
It isn’t made for tub transfers or wet use. For the tub, a bath transfer bench is the better choice.
Why are the ends tapered?
The thin, tapered ends slide under the thigh more easily, so there’s less lifting and less pulling on skin and clothing.
Who should not use a transfer board?
Anyone who can’t sit up with some balance or push with their arms. In that case a patient lift is safer. Ask the user’s care team.
How do I clean the board?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap and dry it. Don’t soak it, and stop using it if it cracks or splinters.
How thick and heavy is the board?
Graham-Field doesn’t list the thickness or weight on the pages we have. Call us at 585-505-6665 and we’ll check.

Shipping & Returns
Shipping & Return Policy
At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.
Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.
Shipping & Order Processing
We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.
Processing Time
Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.
Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.
Transit & Delivery Time
Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.
Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.
Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas
Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.
Freight & Oversized Equipment
Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.
30-Day Return Policy
We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.
Eligible products generally include:
- Electric and power wheelchairs
- Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walkers and rollators
- Patient lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Hospital and homecare beds
- Eligible medical mattresses
- Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
- Overbed tables
- Bathroom benches and shower chairs
- Other eligible medical and mobility equipment
Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.
Return Authorization
Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.
You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.
Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.
Condition of Returned Merchandise
To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:
- In brand-new and unused condition
- In its complete original manufacturer packaging
- With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
- Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
- In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer
We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.
Restocking Fees
Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.
These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.
If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.
Return Shipping & Shipping Charges
The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.
Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.
Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.
Non-Returnable Products
For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.
We currently do not accept returns on:
- Parts & accessories
- Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
- Patient lift slings
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page
If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.
If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.
Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.
If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.
Refused Deliveries
Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.
A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.
Return Shipping Deadline
Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.
This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.
The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.
If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.
Custom & Made-to-Order Products
Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.
For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.
If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.
Questions Before Ordering?
Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.
Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.
For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
