Description

Everest & Jennings Aluminum Transport Chair – 17″ or 19″ Seat, 20 lb, Five Colors

The Everest & Jennings aluminum transport chair is the simple, light option: an E&J lightweight transport chair that weighs 20 lb without the footrests, folds to 10.75″ wide and lets a companion push someone through a store, a clinic or an airport without wrestling a full-size wheelchair.

It comes as a 17″ seat in Red, or as a 19 inch transport chair in Silver, Black, Blue or Aqua. Graham-Field rates it for 250 lb, evenly distributed. The upholstery is flame-retardant padded black nylon, the arms are full length and padded, the back folds down, and the footrests swing away and come off without tools.

Pick the seat width and color from the dropdowns above.

Transport Chair or Wheelchair?

The main difference is who does the pushing. A transport chair has small rear wheels and no handrims, so a companion pushes it from behind; Graham-Field’s manual says this one is meant to be pushed by an attendant at all times. A wheelchair has large rear wheels the user can turn themselves. If the person will always have someone with them, a transport chair is lighter to lift, narrower in doorways and easier to keep in the car. If they want to get around on their own, look at a manual wheelchair.

Why Choose the E&J Aluminum Transport Chair?

It does the basic job well and stays light. At 20 lb without footrests it’s one of the easier chairs for an older spouse or adult child to lift into a trunk, and the carry straps on the seat give a good grip. The fold-down back and 10.75″ folded width mean it stores in a hall closet.

You also get a choice of seat width, which a lot of transport chairs don’t offer: 17″ for a smaller rider or tighter doorways, 19″ for more room. Graham-Field includes a padded leg strap with hook-and-loop loops that slip over the footrests to keep the legs from sliding back.

Who Is the Aluminum Transport Chair Best For?

The E&J aluminum transport chair is a good fit for:

  • Riders up to 250 lb who will always have a companion to push
  • Caregivers who need the lightest chair they can lift into a car
  • Trips out of the house: doctor visits, shopping, travel, family events
  • People who walk around at home but tire on longer outings
  • Homes with narrow doorways (22.25″ wide with the 17″ seat)

Not sure a transport chair is right? Our Guide to Patient Transfer Equipment compares transport chairs and other transfer aids.

Who May Need a Different Chair?

  • Riders over 250 lb: the Everest & Jennings Deluxe Aluminum Transport Chair is rated for 300 lb.
  • Caregivers who don’t want to bend down for the locks: the deluxe chair has locks on the push handle.
  • Users who want to propel themselves: choose a manual wheelchair with large rear wheels.
  • Anyone who needs elevating legrests or a recline: this chair has swing-away footrests only.

250 lb Weight Capacity

Graham-Field rates every seat width and color for a maximum of 250 lb, evenly distributed. If the rider is close to that, step up to the 300 lb deluxe model.

20 lb Aluminum Frame That Folds to 10.75″

The aluminum frame weighs 20 lb with the footrests off. To fold it, Graham-Field’s manual says: take off the footrests, press the back release paddles and lower the upper back, then pull up on the front and rear center of the seat and press the sides together. It folds to 10.75″ wide.

17″ or 19″ Seat With Padded Full-Length Arms

Both seats are 16″ deep and sit 19.25″ off the floor, with an 18.5″ back. The upholstery is padded black nylon and flame retardant, and the full-length arms are padded so the rider has a comfortable place to rest their forearms.

Attendant Wheel Locks on Both Rear Wheels

There’s a rubber-tipped wheel lock lever at each rear wheel. The companion pulls both levers back to lock and pushes them forward to release. They’re wheel locks, not brakes, so set them only once the chair has fully stopped, and always before the rider sits down or stands up.

Tool-Free Swing-Away Footrests and Leg Strap

The footrests adjust without tools, swing to the side so the rider can stand up or sit down, and lift off for folding. The included 3″ padded leg strap fastens with hook-and-loop loops that slide over the installed footrests.

Choosing Your Options

There are two dropdowns: Seat Width and Color. Everything else is the same on every version: 20 lb, 250 lb rating, 16″ seat depth, 19.25″ seat height and the same fold.

Seat Width: measure across the rider’s hips while seated and add about 2″. The 17″ seat makes the chair 22.25″ wide overall, handy for narrow bathroom doors. The 19″ seat makes it 24.25″ wide and gives a larger rider more room.

Color: the frame color changes nothing about fit or function. The 17″ seat comes in Red; the 19″ seat comes in Silver, Black, Blue or Aqua.

Not every combination is made; the dropdown only offers the ones GF builds:

Seat width Overall width Color Graham-Field code
17″ 22.25″ Red EJ781-1
19″ 24.25″ Silver EJ784-1
19″ 24.25″ Black EJ786-1
19″ 24.25″ Blue EJ788-1
19″ 24.25″ Aqua EJ793-1

Aluminum Transport Chair vs. Deluxe 12″ Rear Wheel Transport Chair

Both are Everest & Jennings aluminum transport chairs with fold-down backs, padded arms, swing-away footrests and leg straps. This one is lighter (20 lb versus 21.38 lb), comes in two seat widths and five colors, and costs less. The Deluxe Aluminum Transport Chair carries 300 lb instead of 250 lb, rolls on 12″ flat-free rear wheels, puts the wheel locks on the push handle and includes a positioning belt. Choose the deluxe for a heavier rider or a caregiver with back trouble; choose this one when light weight and a narrow 17″ option matter most.

Common Problem → Aluminum Transport Chair Solution

Problem: Mom’s wheelchair is too heavy for Dad to lift into the car, so they’ve stopped going out.

Solution: At 20 lb without footrests and 10.75″ folded, this chair lifts into a trunk by its seat carry straps, and Dad pushes from behind once they arrive.

“Will it get through our 24-inch bathroom door?” The 17″ seat model is 22.25″ wide, so it should. The 19″ model is 24.25″ wide, too tight for that door.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: 17″ or 19″; hip width seated plus about 2″.
  • Seat depth: 16″.
  • Seat height: 19.25″ from the floor.
  • Back height: 18.5″.
  • Doorways: 22.25″ wide (17″ seat) or 24.25″ wide (19″ seat).
  • Length and height: 23″ overall depth, 39.25″ tall.
  • Storage: folds to 10.75″ wide.
  • Weight: rider up to 250 lb, evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

Graham-Field’s maintenance schedule says to wipe the frame off with a soft cloth regularly and clean it with soap and water every few months. Check the tires and the wheel lock engagement often, look over the upholstery, arms, push handles and footrests for wear, and make sure the casters swivel freely. Don’t adjust or replace the casters yourself; GF says that takes special tools, so call us at 585-505-6665. Keep ramps gentle: the manual warns against inclines steeper than 6 degrees.

What’s Included

Per Graham-Field, the chair comes with tool-free detachable swing-away footrests, a 3″ padded nylon leg strap and carry straps on the seat. The manual mentions a wrench and hex key for crossbrace tightening. Ask us to confirm anything else you expect in the box.

Warranty

Graham-Field lists a one-year limited warranty. Its manual specifies one year on the sideframes and crossbraces and three months on other durable parts, for the original purchaser. We’ll help with any claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a transport chair and a wheelchair?

A transport chair is pushed by a companion and has small rear wheels with no handrims. A wheelchair has large rear wheels the user can push. Transport chairs are lighter and fold smaller.

How much weight does this transport chair hold?

Graham-Field rates it for 250 lb, evenly distributed. For up to 300 lb, see the E&J Deluxe Aluminum Transport Chair.

How much does it weigh?

20 lb without the footrests.

Should I choose the 17″ or 19″ seat?

Measure across the hips while seated and add about 2″. The 17″ seat makes a narrower chair (22.25″ wide); the 19″ seat gives more room (24.25″ wide).

What colors are available?

The 17″ seat comes in Red. The 19″ seat comes in Silver, Black, Blue or Aqua. Color doesn’t change the size or features.

Will it fit through my doors?

It’s 22.25″ wide with the 17″ seat and 24.25″ wide with the 19″ seat. Measure your narrowest doorway, usually the bathroom.

How do the wheel locks work?

The companion pulls the rubber-tipped lever at each rear wheel back to lock and pushes it forward to release. Use them only when the chair is stopped; they aren’t brakes.

Can the rider push themselves?

No. Graham-Field designs it to be pushed by an attendant at all times. For self-propelling, choose a manual wheelchair.

How does it fold?

Remove the footrests, press the back release paddles and lower the back, then pull up on the center of the seat and press the sides together. It folds to 10.75″ wide.

Can the rider stay in the chair in a car?

No. Graham-Field says to transfer to the vehicle seat and use its seat belt. Put the folded chair in the trunk or on the back-seat floor, never the front seat.

What’s the warranty?

Graham-Field lists a one-year limited warranty: sideframes and crossbraces one year, other durable parts three months.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
