Description

Everest & Jennings Advantage Recliner – High Back Reclining Wheelchair With Removable Headrest and Elevating Legrests

The Advantage Recliner wheelchair is a full-size folding wheelchair with a tall back that reclines. A caregiver squeezes the two trigger releases under the push handles and lowers the back anywhere from upright (90 degrees) to almost flat (170 degrees), then lets go to lock it. A removable full-support headrest with an adjustable neck support keeps the head supported as the back goes down.

As an Everest & Jennings reclining wheelchair, it comes ready for that job: anti-tippers are standard, a metal spreader bar across the back keeps the frame from folding and steadies the reclining back, and every version ships as a reclining wheelchair with elevating legrests using E&J’s tool-free front rigging. The upholstery is embossed black leatherette-type vinyl that wipes clean, with a chart pocket on the back.

Graham-Field builds it on a hammertone steel frame rated for 300 lb on the 16″ and 20″ seats, and offers a bariatric 22″ x 19″ version rated for 450 lb. Pick the size in the dropdowns above; each size comes with the arm style listed below.

Why Choose the E&J Advantage Recliner?

Sitting fully upright for hours is hard for some people. They slump, slide forward or simply get worn out, and a standard chair gives them no other position. The Advantage Recliner lets a caregiver change the back angle through the day: upright for meals, partly back to rest, further back for a nap, with the legs raised on the elevating legrests.

It does that without being a big, heavy positioning chair. It still has 24″ wheels with handrims, folds once the spreader bar and headrest come off, and at about 53 lb (57 lb for the 22″ bariatric) it can go in a car.

Who Is the Advantage Recliner Best For?

The Advantage Recliner is a good fit for:

  • People who can’t sit upright comfortably for long and need to rest reclined during the day
  • Users who need head and neck support, thanks to the high back and removable headrest
  • Anyone who needs their legs raised, since elevating legrests come on every version
  • Caregivers looking after someone at home or in a care setting who want one chair for sitting and resting
  • Larger users up to 450 lb who need a 22″ wide, 19″ deep seat (the bariatric version)

For more on how reclining chairs differ from standard ones, see our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base, or try the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool.

Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?

  • Users who only need to sit upright: a standard wheelchair like the E&J Advantage LX is lighter and simpler.
  • People who need to tilt the whole seat, not just the back: a recliner opens the hip angle as the back goes down. Ask your therapist whether tilt-in-space is a better fit.
  • Users over 450 lb: look at a heavy-duty chair rated higher than this one.
  • People who want to self-propel while reclined: the recline is meant to be set by someone behind the chair. The user can push with the handrims when the back is upright.

Back Reclines From 90 to 170 Degrees

Graham-Field lists a full manual recline range of 90 to 170 degrees. To lower the back, the caregiver pulls both trigger releases under the push handles at the same time, tilts the back to the position they want and releases the triggers to lock it. Raising it works the same way. The back is 23″ tall, and the overall chair height is 51″.

Removable Headrest With Adjustable Neck Support

The full-support headrest slides on and off its posts, and it has an extra neck support that adjusts to the user. Take it off for folding or when the user doesn’t need it.

Elevating Legrests on Every Version

Every Advantage Recliner comes with tool-free, adjustable elevating legrests. They raise the legs for comfort when the back is reclined, and they swing away and lift off for transfers and folding.

Anti-Tippers and Spreader Bar Standard

Reclining moves the user’s weight toward the back of the chair, so E&J includes rear anti-tippers and recommends using them at all times, set in the downward position. The metal spreader bar across the back works as an anti-fold device and holds the back posts steady. It comes off with a knob when you want to fold the chair.

300 lb or 450 lb Capacity

The 16″ x 17″ and 20″ x 17″ versions are rated for 300 lb, evenly distributed. The 22″ x 19″ bariatric version is rated for 450 lb with a wider, deeper seat. The frame is hammertone steel throughout.

Choosing Your Options

There are two dropdowns, Seat Size and Arms, but each seat size comes with one arm style, so choosing the seat size sets the arms. All three versions have the reclining back, removable headrest, elevating legrests, anti-tippers and vinyl upholstery. Ask us about other sizes.

Seat Size Arms Weight capacity Overall width Chair weight Graham-Field code
16″ W x 17″ D Detachable desk arms 300 lb 26.5″ About 53 lb 3K010230
20″ W x 17″ D Detachable desk arms 300 lb 30.5″ About 53 lb 3K010330
22″ W x 19″ D Detachable full arms 450 lb 32.5″ About 57 lb 3K020450

Seat Size: measure across the hips while seated and add about 2 inches. The 16″ seat suits smaller adults, the 20″ suits broader users, and the 22″ x 19″ adds both width and an extra 2″ of depth for larger users up to 450 lb. Check your doorways against the overall width.

Arms: Detachable desk arms (16″ and 20″) are shorter at the front so the chair can roll up to a table, and they lift off for side transfers. Detachable full arms (22″) run the full length of the seat for more support when standing, and also lift off.

Not sure which size fits? Call us at 585-505-6665 and we’ll help.

Advantage Recliner vs. a Standard Wheelchair

A standard chair like the E&J Advantage LX has a fixed back about 16.5″ high, weighs about 40 lb and folds without any parts coming off. The Advantage Recliner has a 23″ back that reclines from 90 to 170 degrees, a headrest, elevating legrests and anti-tippers as standard, and it weighs more (about 53 to 57 lb). If the user sits upright and transfers easily, the standard chair is easier to live with. If they need to rest, recline or have their head supported, the recliner is worth the extra weight.

Common Problem → Advantage Recliner Solution

Problem: Grandma spends most of the day in her wheelchair. By mid-afternoon she’s tired, slides forward in the seat and nods off with her head falling to one side.

Solution: An Advantage Recliner. Her caregiver can lower the back partway after lunch so she rests against the high back and headrest, raise her legs on the elevating legrests, and bring her back upright for dinner. The anti-tippers stay in place the whole time.

“Will it fit in our car?” Yes. Take off the headrest, legrests and spreader bar and it folds to 11.5″ wide. It weighs about 53 lb, so plan on two people to lift it into a trunk.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: hip width seated plus about 2″. Choose 16″, 20″ or 22″.
  • Seat depth: 17″ on the 16″ and 20″ seats; 19″ on the 22″ seat. With the user sitting all the way back, leave 2 to 3 fingers between the seat edge and the back of the knee.
  • Seat height: 19.5″ on all sizes.
  • Back height: 23″ (overall chair height 51″).
  • Doorways: overall width 26.5″ (16″), 30.5″ (20″) or 32.5″ (22″). Overall depth is 34″ with the back upright; allow more room behind the chair when it’s reclined.
  • Folded: 11.5″ wide after removing the front rigging, spreader bar and headrest.
  • User weight: 300 lb (16″ and 20″) or 450 lb (22″ x 19″), evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

From E&J’s manual: wipe the frame with a soft cloth at least once a week and dry it right away if it gets wet. Wash the frame every three months with mild soap and water; it doesn’t need wax. Clean the vinyl upholstery and plastic parts once a month with mild soap and water. Don’t use solvents, abrasive cleaners, spray silicone, steam or pressure washers. Check the casters every three months and have a dealer check the bearings every six months.

What’s Included

Graham-Field lists the removable full-support headrest, elevating legrests, rear anti-tippers, the metal spreader bar and a chart pocket as standard, along with the arms for your size. A positioning belt, wheel lock extensions and an anti-fold bar for the lower frame are sold separately. Ask us to confirm the box contents for your size.

Warranty

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty on the Advantage Recliner. E&J’s user manual spells it out: sideframes and crossbraces for five years, wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks for one year, and all other durable parts for six months, for the original purchaser. Call us at 585-505-6665 if you ever need help with a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far does the Advantage Recliner recline?

From upright at 90 degrees to nearly flat at 170 degrees. The back locks in steps anywhere in that range.

Who reclines the back?

A caregiver standing behind the chair. They pull both trigger releases under the push handles together, move the back, then let go to lock it.

How much weight does it hold?

300 lb on the 16″ x 17″ and 20″ x 17″ seats, and 450 lb on the 22″ x 19″ bariatric version, evenly distributed.

Does it come with elevating legrests?

Yes. Every Advantage Recliner comes with tool-free adjustable elevating legrests.

Is the headrest removable?

Yes. The full-support headrest slides off its posts, and it has an adjustable neck support.

Why does it have anti-tippers?

Reclining shifts the user’s weight toward the back, so anti-tippers come standard to help keep the chair from tipping backward. E&J recommends using them at all times.

How much does the Advantage Recliner weigh?

About 53 lb for the 16″ and 20″ seats and about 57 lb for the 22″ seat, per Graham-Field.

Which arms come with each size?

The 16″ and 20″ seats come with detachable desk arms, and the 22″ x 19″ comes with detachable full arms. Both styles lift off for side transfers.

Can the user push it themselves?

Yes, with the back upright. It has 24″ rear wheels with handrims, but the recline itself is set by someone behind the chair.

What is the warranty?

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty. The manual covers sideframes and crossbraces for five years, wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks for one year, and other durable parts for six months.

Does Medicare cover a reclining wheelchair?

Medicare Part B may help cover a reclining wheelchair as durable medical equipment when a doctor documents the need. Coverage depends on your plan and the supplier, so check with your plan before you order.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
