Description

Everest & Jennings Traveler L3 Plus Wheelchair – Standard or Low-Seat XVI Frame, 300 lb Capacity

The Traveler L3 Plus wheelchair is the everyday workhorse of the Traveler line. Graham-Field builds the Everest & Jennings Traveler L3 Plus for short- and long-term use and for rental fleets, on a carbon steel frame that weighs under 36 lb without footrests, and rates every size for 300 lb. It’s the E&J Traveler L3 Plus lightweight wheelchair we suggest when someone wants a dependable chair that can grow with the user.

Two things make it flexible. Every chair comes with a removable 2″ seat extension, so a 16″ deep seat can become 18″ deep if the user needs more thigh support later. And it’s offered on two frames: the standard frame (18″ or 20″ seat height) and the low-seat XVI frame (16.3″ or 17.9″) for shorter users.

You pick the seat size, seat height frame, arms and front rigging from the dropdowns above. Non-marking polyurethane tires, adjustable anti-tippers, industry compatible front rigging and black nylon upholstery with a chart pocket are standard.

Why Choose the Everest & Jennings Traveler L3 Plus?

A lot of budget chairs make you guess the seat depth and live with it. The L3 Plus ships with a 2″ seat extension and hardware, so you can start at 16″ deep and add depth if the user’s thighs need more support. A fastener tab under the seat joins the seat and back upholstery so there’s no gap at the bottom of the back.

It also offers the widest choice of arms in the Traveler line: fixed-length flip-back desk arms, flip-back desk arms that adjust in height, and detachable flip-back full-length arms. Add the low-seat XVI frame, and one model covers a lot of different users. Graham-Field backs the frame with a five-year limited warranty.

Who Is the Traveler L3 Plus Best For?

The Traveler L3 Plus is a good fit for:

  • Users up to 300 lb who need an everyday manual wheelchair
  • Shorter users who need a lower seat to reach the floor (the XVI frame)
  • People whose forearms rest higher or lower than standard arms allow (adjustable-height arms)
  • Caregivers, facilities and families who want one chair that adjusts for more than one person
  • Anyone recovering from surgery or an injury who needs a chair for weeks or months

Not sure what to measure? Our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base walks through seat sizes and arm styles, and the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool helps you narrow it down.

Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?

  • Users over 300 lb: ask us about a heavy-duty or bariatric chair.
  • People who want the lightest chair possible or an adjustable back height: look at the Everest & Jennings Traveler L4.
  • People who will always be pushed: a transport chair is smaller and lighter.
  • Users who need to recline or tilt: the L3 Plus has a fixed back. Ask us about reclining chairs.

300 lb Weight Capacity on Every Size

Graham-Field rates the Traveler L3 Plus for a maximum of 300 lb, evenly distributed, on the 16″, 18″ and 20″ seats and on both frames. You don’t have to move up a seat size just to get the higher rating.

Under 36 lb, Carbon Steel Frame

The frame is carbon steel with a hammertone finish. GF lists the standard chair at under 36 lb without front rigging, and the XVI chair at about 31 lb. Take the footrests off and fold it, and it’s 12.25″ wide for the trunk or a closet.

2″ Removable Seat Extension: 16″ or 18″ Deep

Every L3 Plus comes with a detachable 2″ seat extension and its hardware. Without it, the seat is 16″ deep; with it, 18″ deep. A seat that’s too short leaves the thighs unsupported, and one that’s too long presses behind the knees, so this lets you fit the depth to the user instead of the other way around.

Standard Frame or Low-Seat XVI Frame

The standard frame has 24″ rear wheels and 8″ casters, and its two-position axle and caster forks set the seat at 18″ or 20″ from the floor. The XVI frame uses 20″ rear wheels and 6″ casters to bring the seat down to 16.3″ or 17.9″. GF builds the XVI with flip-back desk arms and swing-away footrests.

Three Flip-Back Arm Styles, Including Adjustable Height

All the arms are padded and flip back for side transfers. Fixed desk arms are a set height and shorter in front so the user can roll up to a table. Adjustable-height desk arms have a release on the upper arm: pull it, slide the armpad up or down to one of several preset holes, and let it lock, so the armrest meets the user’s forearm with the shoulders relaxed. Detachable flip-back full-length arms run the length of the seat and give more to push on when standing up.

Choosing Your Options

There are four dropdowns: Seat Size, Seat Height, Arms and Front Rigging. Every L3 Plus has the same 300 lb rating, 2″ seat extension, anti-tippers and upholstery.

Seat Size: measure across the hips at the widest point while seated and add about 2″; choose 16″, 18″ or 20″. Every seat is 16″ deep, or 18″ with the included extension. Overall width grows with the seat: 24″, 26″ or 28″ on the standard frame.

Seat Height: the standard frame sets the seat at 18″ or 20″ with 24″ rear wheels. The low-seat XVI frame sets it at 16.3″ or 17.9″ with 20″ rear wheels and 6″ casters. Pick the XVI for a shorter user who needs their feet flat on the floor, or anyone who needs a lower seat to get in and out. When in doubt, measure from the back of the user’s knee to the floor in their usual shoes and call us.

Arms: fixed desk arms for rolling up to tables; adjustable-height desk arms when the standard armrest is too high or too low for the user; full-length arms for more support standing up. All flip back.

Front Rigging: swing-away footrests for everyday use; elevating legrests for swelling, a cast or legs that need to stay raised.

Not every combination is made; the dropdown only offers the ones GF builds:

Traveler L3 Plus vs. Traveler L4

Both are Everest & Jennings carbon steel chairs with flip-back arms, 24″ rear wheels on the standard frame and a five-year limited frame warranty. The L3 Plus is rated for 300 lb on every size, includes the 2″ seat extension, and is the one with the low-seat XVI frame and adjustable-height arms. The Traveler L4 is a little lighter (under 34 lb) and adds a height-adjustable back, but carries 250 lb on most sizes. For a shorter user or a heavier user, the L3 Plus is usually the better fit.

Common Problem → Traveler L3 Plus Solution

Problem: Grandma is 5’0″. In a standard wheelchair her feet don’t reach the floor, she slides forward to touch down, and the armrests push her shoulders up.

Solution: The XVI frame drops the seat to 16.3″ or 17.9″ so her feet can reach the floor. On the standard frame, adjustable-height desk arms let you set the armrest where her forearms rest naturally.

“Does the low seat still fold for the car?” Yes. The XVI folds the same way and GF lists it at about 31 lb without footrests.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: hip width seated plus about 2″. Options 16″, 18″, 20″.
  • Seat depth: 16″, or 18″ with the included 2″ extension.
  • Seat height: 18″ or 20″ (standard frame); 16.3″ or 17.9″ (XVI frame).
  • Back height: 17.25″.
  • Doorways: standard frame 24″ (16″ seat), 26″ (18″) or 28″ (20″) wide; XVI about 23.8″, 25.8″ or 27.75″ wide.
  • Storage: folds to 12.25″ wide.
  • Weight: up to 300 lb, evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

Graham-Field’s manual says to wipe the frame with a soft cloth at least once a week and dry it right away if it gets wet. Every three months, wash the frame with a mild soap and water solution; it doesn’t need wax. Clean the upholstery and plastic parts at least once a month with mild soap and water. Don’t use solvents, abrasive cleaners, caustic chemicals, spray silicone, steam or pressure washers. If the chair starts pulling to one side or the casters shimmy, call us at 585-505-6665.

What’s Included

Per Graham-Field, each L3 Plus comes with the arm style and front rigging you choose, adjustable anti-tippers, the detachable 2″ seat extension with hardware, heel loops on the swing-away footrests, the under-seat fastener tab and black nylon upholstery with a chart pocket. Ask us to confirm anything else you expect in the box.

Warranty

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty on the Traveler L3 Plus. The manual details it: sideframes and crossbraces for five years; wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks for one year; other durable parts for six months, for the original purchaser. Labor isn’t included. We’ll help you with any claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Everest & Jennings Traveler L3 Plus?

It’s a lightweight carbon steel manual wheelchair, under 36 lb without footrests, rated for 300 lb. It comes with a 2″ seat extension, flip-back padded arms and anti-tippers, on a standard frame or a low-seat XVI frame.

How much weight can the Traveler L3 Plus hold?

Graham-Field rates every L3 Plus for 300 lb, evenly distributed, on all seat sizes and both frames.

What’s the difference between the standard frame and the XVI?

Seat height. The standard frame sets the seat at 18″ or 20″ with 24″ rear wheels and 8″ casters. The XVI sets it at 16.3″ or 17.9″ with 20″ rear wheels and 6″ casters, for shorter users.

What does the 2″ seat extension do?

It adds 2″ of seat depth, turning the 16″ deep seat into an 18″ deep seat. It comes with every L3 Plus, and you can add it or remove it as needed.

What are adjustable-height desk arms?

Desk-length flip-back arms whose armpad slides up or down to preset positions. Pull the release, set the height, and let it lock, so the armrest meets the user’s forearm comfortably.

Which arm style should I choose?

Fixed desk arms suit most people and let you roll up to a table. Choose adjustable-height desk arms if standard armrests sit too high or low, and full-length arms if the user pushes up on the arms to stand. All three flip back for side transfers.

Should I get swing-away footrests or elevating legrests?

Swing-away footrests for everyday use. Elevating legrests if the legs swell, a leg is in a cast, or the legs need to stay raised. Elevating legrests are offered with fixed desk arms on the standard frame.

How wide is it? Will it fit through my doors?

On the standard frame it’s 24″ wide with a 16″ seat, 26″ with an 18″ seat and 28″ with a 20″ seat. The XVI is slightly narrower. Measure your narrowest doorway first.

Does it fold for the car?

Yes. It folds to 12.25″ wide. Remove the footrests first; the standard chair is under 36 lb without them.

Can I sit in the wheelchair while riding in a car?

No. Graham-Field says to transfer to the vehicle seat and use its seat belt. Store the folded chair in the back seat area or trunk, not the front seat.

What’s the warranty?

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty: sideframes and crossbraces five years, wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks one year, other durable parts six months. Labor isn’t included.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
