Description
Everest & Jennings Traveler SE Plus Hemi Wheelchair – Standard Chair With a Two-Position Seat Height for Foot Propelling
The Traveler SE Plus wheelchair is E&J’s answer for people who need a regular folding wheelchair most of the time, but also need the seat low enough to push with their feet. Graham-Field describes it as a standard wheelchair for transportation combined with a two-inch seat height adjustment for a hemi position: a two-position axle and caster fork let the seat sit at 20″ or drop to 18″.
That makes it an Everest & Jennings hemi wheelchair without giving up the everyday features of a standard chair: 24″ rear wheels with handrims, 8″ front casters, padded desk or full arms, tool-free swing-away front rigging with heel loops and composite footplates, and black vinyl upholstery with a chart pocket on the back.
It’s built on the classic E&J saddle-joint tubular frame in carbon steel with a hammertone finish, rated by Graham-Field for 300 lb, evenly distributed, and it weighs about 36.5 lb. For anyone searching for a low seat wheelchair that still folds into a car, it’s a practical, no-fuss choice.
Why Choose the E&J Traveler SE Plus?
A seat that’s too high is the most common reason a person can’t move a wheelchair with their feet. Their heels hover, they slide forward to reach the floor and they end up perched on the front edge of the seat. The SE Plus fixes that at the frame: the axle and caster fork each have two positions, so the whole seat comes down 2″ instead of the user trying to make up the difference.
At the same time it’s still a full standard wheelchair. When the user is being pushed or self-propelling with the handrims, it works like any other E&J chair, and it folds the same way for the trunk.
Who Is the Traveler SE Plus Best For?
The SE Plus is a good fit for:
- Adults up to 300 lb who push the chair with one or both feet, alone or along with a hand on the handrim
- Shorter users who find a 20″ seat too high to sit with their feet flat on the floor
- People with weakness on one side of the body whose therapist has suggested a hemi-height chair
- Families who want one chair that works for both foot propelling at home and being pushed on outings
- Anyone who wants the wipe-clean vinyl upholstery and a lighter steel frame (about 36.5 lb)
If you’re not sure what seat height or type of chair is right, our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base explains hemi chairs and seat heights, and the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool can help you narrow it down.
Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?
- Users over 300 lb: choose a heavy-duty or bariatric chair with a higher weight rating.
- People who need a seat lower than 18″: the SE Plus goes from 20″ to 18″ and no lower. Compare other hemi chairs such as the Chariot II Hemi Wheelchair, or call us with the user’s measurements.
- Anyone who needs a seat deeper than 16″: all SE Plus sizes are 16″ deep.
- People who need to recline or need head support: look at a reclining wheelchair with a headrest.
18″ or 20″ Seat Height: the Hemi Position
Graham-Field lists the SE Plus seat height as 18″ or 20″. The change is made with the two-position axle and caster fork, which moves the rear wheels and front casters together so the seat stays level. E&J’s manual recommends having an authorized dealer make rear wheel and caster adjustments, since special tools are needed, so tell us which height you need when you order and call us at 585-505-6665 before you buy if the user needs the low 18″ position.
300 lb Capacity on the Classic E&J Frame
The SE Plus uses E&J’s saddle-joint tubular frame in carbon steel with a hammertone finish, and Graham-Field rates it for 300 lb, evenly distributed. At about 36.5 lb (GF’s approximate weight, which changes a little with the rigging), it’s a few pounds lighter than many steel standard chairs.
24″ Rear Wheels and 8″ Casters
The 24″ rear wheels have handrims for pushing with the hands, and the 8″ casters swivel for steering. A wheel lock on each rear wheel holds the chair still for transfers: push the lever forward to lock and pull it back to release. E&J notes the locks are for parking only, not for slowing down.
Tool-Free Front Rigging With Heel Loops and Composite Footplates
The swing-away footrests come with heel loops and composite footplates, and they lift off without tools. That matters on a hemi chair: a user who pushes with one foot can swing the footrest on that side out of the way and keep the other foot supported. Elevating legrests are available in the Front Rigging dropdown on most sizes.
Folds to 12.25″ Wide
Take off the footrests or legrests, pull up on the front and back of the seat and the chair folds to 12.25″ wide. The detachable arms lift off too, which makes it easier to load into a car.
Choosing Your Options
There are three dropdowns: Seat Size, Arms and Front Rigging. Every version has black vinyl upholstery and the 18″ or 20″ seat height. Not every combination is made; the dropdown only offers the ones Graham-Field builds, listed in the table below.
Seat Size (16″, 18″ or 20″ wide, all 16″ deep): measure across the hips while seated and add about 2 inches. Overall width is 24.5″ with the 16″ seat, 26.5″ with the 18″ and 28.5″ with the 20″, so check your doorways as well as the user.
Arms: Detachable desk arms are cut shorter at the front so the user can pull up to a table, and they lift off for side transfers. Detachable full arms give a longer surface to push on when standing, and they lift off too. Fixed full arms (18″ seat only) stay on the chair, which is simple but makes sideways transfers harder.
Front Rigging: Swing-away footrests with heel loops are the everyday choice and the easiest to swing aside for foot propelling. Elevating legrests raise the leg for swelling, a cast or a knee that has to stay straight.

Traveler SE Plus vs. a Standard-Height Wheelchair
A typical standard wheelchair has one seat height of around 19.5″ to 20″. That’s fine for someone who is pushed or uses the handrims, but many people can’t get their heels flat on the floor from that height. The SE Plus starts as a standard chair at 20″ and can be set 2″ lower, at 18″, for a hemi position. If nobody will push with their feet, a standard chair like the E&J Advantage LX is all you need; if someone will, the SE Plus is the one to choose.
Common Problem → Traveler SE Plus Solution
Problem: After a stroke, Dad has good strength on his left side but not his right. He wants to move around the house on his own, but in his current chair his left foot barely touches the floor and he keeps sliding forward to reach it.
Solution: A Traveler SE Plus set to the 18″ hemi position, with detachable desk arms and swing-away footrests. His left foot reaches the floor, he steers with his left hand on the handrim, the left footrest swings out of the way and the right one keeps his weaker leg supported. Follow his therapist’s advice on seat height and how to propel.
“Can we still push him in it on outings?” Yes. It’s a full standard wheelchair with push handles and 24″ wheels, and it folds to 12.25″ for the car.
Sizing & Fit
- Seat height: 18″ or 20″. For foot propelling, the user should sit all the way back with the heel flat on the floor and the knee bent at about a right angle. Measure from the floor to the back of the knee in everyday shoes; if that number is closer to 18″ than 20″, plan on the low position.
- Seat width: hip width seated plus about 2″. Choose 16″, 18″ or 20″.
- Seat depth: 16″ on all sizes.
- Back height: 15.5″. Overall height is 35.5″.
- Doorways: overall width 24.5″ (16″ seat), 26.5″ (18″) or 28.5″ (20″). Overall depth is 31.5″.
- Storage: folds to 12.25″ wide; about 36.5 lb.
- User weight: 300 lb maximum, evenly distributed.
Care & Cleaning
From E&J’s manual: wipe the frame with a soft cloth at least once a week and dry it right away if it gets wet. Wash the frame every three months with mild soap and water; it doesn’t need wax. Clean the vinyl upholstery and plastic parts at least once a month with mild soap and water. Skip solvents, abrasive cleaners, spray silicone, steam and pressure washers. Check that the casters swivel freely every three months and have a dealer check the wheel and caster bearings every six months.
What’s Included
The chair comes with the arms and front rigging you select, black vinyl upholstery with a chart pocket on the back, and heel loops on swing-away footrests. Anti-tippers (an adjustable pair with wheels), a positioning belt, an oxygen holder and a lap tray are sold separately. Ask us to confirm the box contents for your configuration.
Warranty
E&J’s user manual gives the Traveler SE Plus a Graham-Field limited warranty of five years on the sideframes and crossbraces, one year on the wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks, and six months on all other durable parts, for the original purchaser. Labor isn’t included. Call us at 585-505-6665 and we’ll help with any claim.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hemi wheelchair?
A hemi wheelchair has a lower seat so the user can reach the floor and push the chair with their feet. The Traveler SE Plus does this with a seat that can be set at 18″ instead of the standard 20″.
What seat heights does the Traveler SE Plus have?
18″ or 20″. Graham-Field uses a two-position axle and caster fork to give the 2″ adjustment, so the seat stays level in either position.
Can I change the seat height myself?
E&J recommends having an authorized dealer adjust the rear wheels and casters because special tools are needed. Tell us which height you need before you order and we’ll help you get it set up.
How do I know if I need the 18″ position?
Measure from the floor to the back of the knee while seated in everyday shoes. If the user can’t get the heel flat on the floor at 20″, the 18″ position is usually the better fit, but follow your therapist’s advice.
How much weight can the Traveler SE Plus hold?
Graham-Field rates it for 300 lb, evenly distributed.
How much does it weigh?
About 36.5 lb, which is Graham-Field’s approximate figure. Weight changes a little with seat size and front rigging, and taking off the footrests and arms makes it lighter to lift.
What seat sizes are available?
16″, 18″ and 20″ wide, all 16″ deep. Measure hip width while seated and add about 2 inches.
Can I push with one foot and use the footrest on the other side?
Yes. The footrests swing away and lift off without tools, so you can move one out of the way and keep the other in place.
Is the upholstery easy to clean?
Yes. It’s black vinyl, and E&J says to clean it at least once a month with mild soap and water.
Does the Traveler SE Plus fold?
Yes. Remove the front rigging, lift the seat in the middle and the frame folds to 12.25″ wide.
What is the warranty?
Per the E&J user manual: five years on the sideframes and crossbraces, one year on wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks, and six months on other durable parts. Labor isn’t included.
Does Medicare cover a hemi wheelchair?
Medicare Part B may help cover a manual wheelchair as durable medical equipment when a doctor prescribes it for use at home. Coverage depends on your plan and the supplier, so check with your plan before you order.

Shipping & Returns
Shipping & Return Policy
At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.
Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.
Shipping & Order Processing
We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.
Processing Time
Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.
Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.
Transit & Delivery Time
Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.
Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.
Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas
Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.
Freight & Oversized Equipment
Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.
30-Day Return Policy
We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.
Eligible products generally include:
- Electric and power wheelchairs
- Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walkers and rollators
- Patient lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Hospital and homecare beds
- Eligible medical mattresses
- Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
- Overbed tables
- Bathroom benches and shower chairs
- Other eligible medical and mobility equipment
Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.
Return Authorization
Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.
You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.
Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.
Condition of Returned Merchandise
To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:
- In brand-new and unused condition
- In its complete original manufacturer packaging
- With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
- Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
- In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer
We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.
Restocking Fees
Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.
These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.
If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.
Return Shipping & Shipping Charges
The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.
Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.
Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.
Non-Returnable Products
For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.
We currently do not accept returns on:
- Parts & accessories
- Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
- Patient lift slings
- Custom or made-to-order products
- Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page
If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.
Damaged or Incorrect Orders
We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.
If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.
Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.
If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.
Refused Deliveries
Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.
A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.
Return Shipping Deadline
Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.
This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.
Refund Processing
Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.
The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.
If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.
Custom & Made-to-Order Products
Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.
For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.
If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.
Questions Before Ordering?
Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.
Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.
For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
