Description

Everest & Jennings Traveler L4 Wheelchair – Lightweight Wheelchair with Flip-Back Arms and an Adjustable Back

The Traveler L4 wheelchair is the lighter, more adjustable chair in the Everest & Jennings Traveler L4 and L3 family. Graham-Field builds it on a carbon steel frame that weighs under 34 lb without the footrests, and calls it a high strength, lightweight chair for both home use and rehab. If you want a lightweight wheelchair with flip-back arms that you can still tune to the person using it, this is the one we point people to.

Three things set the L4 apart: the back height adjusts (16.5″ or 18.5″), the seat height adjusts (18″ or 20″) with a two-position axle and multi-position caster forks, and both arm styles flip back out of the way for side transfers. Non-marking polyurethane tires, precision bearings, anti-tippers and black nylon upholstery with a chart pocket come standard.

You choose the seat size, arm style and front rigging from the dropdowns above. E&J rates it for 250 lb on the 16″ deep seats and 300 lb on the 18″ x 18″ seat, evenly distributed.

Why Choose the Everest & Jennings Traveler L4?

Most standard chairs come set up one way and stay that way. The L4 lets you adjust the two things that matter most for comfort day to day: how high the back comes up, and how high the seat sits off the floor. A shorter user can drop the seat to 18″ so their feet reach the floor; a taller user can raise it to 20″ and bring the back up to 18.5″.

It also stays easy to live with. At under 34 lb without footrests and 11.5″ wide folded, it lifts into a trunk, and the flip-back arms swing up and out of the way so the user can slide sideways onto a bed, toilet or car seat without removing anything. Graham-Field backs the frame with a five-year limited warranty.

Who Is the Traveler L4 Best For?

The Traveler L4 is a good fit for:

  • Adults who use a wheelchair every day at home and want a chair they can adjust to fit
  • Users up to 250 lb (or up to 300 lb in the 18″ x 18″ seat)
  • People who transfer sideways and want arms that flip back out of the way
  • Families who need to fold the chair and lift it into a car
  • Users with leg swelling or a leg that has to stay raised, with the elevating legrest option

Still weighing your options? Our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base covers fit, seat sizes and front rigging, and the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool asks a few questions to narrow it down.

Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?

  • Users over 300 lb: the L4 isn’t rated for it. Ask us about a heavy-duty or bariatric chair.
  • Shorter users who move the chair with their feet: the L4’s lowest seat height is 18″. A hemi-height chair with a lower seat may suit them better.
  • People who will always be pushed by someone else: a transport chair is lighter and smaller. See our transport chair category.
  • Anyone who needs to recline: the L4 has a fixed back. Ask us about a reclining wheelchair.

250 lb Capacity, 300 lb on the 18″ x 18″ Seat

Graham-Field rates the Traveler L4 for a maximum of 250 lb on the 16″ deep seats and 300 lb on the models with an 18″ seat depth, evenly distributed. In our dropdown that means the 18″ W x 18″ D seat carries the 300 lb rating. If the user is close to the limit, pick the 18″ x 18″ seat or ask us about a heavy-duty chair.

Under 34 lb With a Carbon Steel Frame

The frame is carbon steel with a hammertone finish, and GF lists the chair at under 34 lb without front rigging. The spec weights run from 31.6 lb (16″ seat) to 32 lb (20″ seat and the 18″ x 18″ seat). That’s light enough for most caregivers to fold and lift into a trunk, with the footrests taken off first.

Seat Height 18″ or 20″, Back Height 16.5″ or 18.5″

A two-position axle and multi-position caster forks give 2″ of seat height adjustment, 18″ or 20″ from the floor. The back is height adjustable too, at 16.5″ or 18.5″. Lower seat for a shorter user or one who needs their feet on the floor; higher seat and back for a taller user. These are setup adjustments, so ask us or your therapist if you’re not sure which way to set it.

Flip-Back Desk Arms or Full-Length Arms

Every L4 we sell has flip-back arms, so the arm swings up and back for a side transfer. Desk-length arms are shorter in front, so the user can roll right up to a table or desk. Full-length arms give more forearm support and something to push up on when standing. GF builds full-length arms on the 18″ x 18″ seat; all other sizes come with desk arms.

Tool-Free Swing-Away Footrests or Elevating Legrests

The front rigging is tool-free adjustable and industry compatible. Swing-away footrests come with heel loops and swing to the side for transfers. Elevating legrests raise the leg, which helps when there’s swelling, a leg in a cast, or a doctor’s instruction to keep the legs up. Elevating legrests are offered on the 16″ x 16″ and 20″ x 16″ seats.

Choosing Your Options

There are three dropdowns: Seat Size, Arms and Front Rigging. The frame, wheels, adjustable back and seat height range are the same on every L4.

Seat Size: measure across the hips at the widest point while seated and add about 2″ for seat width. For depth, measure from the back of the hip to the back of the knee and leave a couple of fingers of space behind the knee. The seat width also sets how wide the chair is: 23″ overall with a 16″ seat, 25″ with an 18″ seat and 27″ with a 20″ seat. Pick the 18″ x 18″ seat if the user has longer thighs or needs the 300 lb rating.

Arms: desk arms let the user pull up close to a table; full arms give more support for standing up. Both flip back.

Front Rigging: swing-away footrests for everyday use, elevating legrests when the legs need to be raised.

Not every combination is made; the dropdown only offers the ones GF builds:

Seat size Arms Front rigging Graham-Field code
16″ W x 16″ D Flip-back desk Swing-away footrests 3F020220
16″ W x 16″ D Flip-back desk Elevating legrests 3F020230
18″ W x 16″ D Flip-back desk Swing-away footrests 3F020120
18″ W x 18″ D Flip-back desk Swing-away footrests 3F030120
18″ W x 18″ D Flip-back full Swing-away footrests 3F030140
20″ W x 16″ D Flip-back desk Swing-away footrests 3F020320
20″ W x 16″ D Flip-back desk Elevating legrests 3F020330

Not sure which to pick? Call us at 585-505-6665 and we’ll help you match the chair to the user.

Traveler L4 vs. Traveler L3 Plus

Both are Everest & Jennings lightweight chairs with carbon steel frames, flip-back arms and five-year limited frame warranties. The L4 is the lighter one (under 34 lb versus under 36 lb for the L3 Plus) and it’s the one with a height-adjustable back and a true 18″ deep seat option. The L3 Plus carries 300 lb on every size, comes with a 2″ seat extension and offers a low-seat XVI frame and adjustable-height arms. If adjusting the back and keeping the weight down matter most, choose the L4.

Common Problem → Traveler L4 Solution

Problem: Mom’s old wheelchair is set too high. Her feet dangle, the back stops below her shoulder blades, and every time she moves to the bed someone has to take the arm off.

Solution: Set the L4 at the 18″ seat height so her feet reach the footrests and floor comfortably, raise the back to 18.5″ if she wants more support, and flip the arm back for each transfer. Nothing has to come off.

“Will it still fit in our sedan?” It folds to 11.5″ wide and weighs under 34 lb with the footrests off, so most trunks take it.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: hip width seated plus about 2″. Options 16″, 18″ or 20″.
  • Seat depth: 16″ standard; 18″ on the 18″ wide seat for longer thighs.
  • Seat height: 18″ or 20″ from the floor.
  • Back height: 16.5″ or 18.5″.
  • Doorways: overall width is 23″ (16″ seat), 25″ (18″ seat) or 27″ (20″ seat). Measure your narrowest doorway first.
  • Storage: 11.5″ wide folded, 36″ tall.
  • Weight: up to 250 lb, or 300 lb on the 18″ x 18″ seat, evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

Graham-Field’s manual lists a soft cloth and a mild soap and water solution for cleaning. Wipe the frame down regularly and dry it if it gets wet. Once a week check the tires, the wheel lock engagement, the anti-tippers and the handgrips; once a month check the upholstery, arms and wheel alignment. Keep the anti-tippers installed in the down position whenever the chair is in use. Bearing and alignment work is a dealer job, so call us at 585-505-6665 if the chair pulls to one side.

What’s Included

Per Graham-Field, each L4 comes with the arm style and front rigging you choose, anti-tippers, heel loops on the swing-away footrests and black nylon upholstery with a chart pocket on the back. Ask us to confirm anything else you expect in the box.

Warranty

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty on the Traveler L4. The manual spells it out: sideframes and crossbraces for five years; wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks for one year; other durable parts for six months, for the original purchaser. Labor isn’t included. As an authorized dealer, we’ll help you with any claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Everest & Jennings Traveler L4?

It’s a lightweight manual wheelchair with a carbon steel frame under 34 lb, flip-back arms, an adjustable back (16.5″ or 18.5″) and an adjustable seat height (18″ or 20″). It comes in 16″, 18″ and 20″ seat widths.

How much weight can the Traveler L4 hold?

Graham-Field rates it for 250 lb on the 16″ deep seats and 300 lb on the 18″ x 18″ seat, evenly distributed. Above 300 lb, ask us about a heavy-duty chair.

How much does the Traveler L4 weigh?

Under 34 lb without the footrests. GF’s spec weights are 31.6 lb to 32 lb depending on seat size.

What seat size should I choose?

Measure across the hips while seated and add about 2″ for width; pick 16″, 18″ or 20″. Choose the 18″ x 18″ seat for longer thighs or if you need the 300 lb rating. Call us if you’re between sizes.

Can I change the seat height?

Yes. The two-position axle and caster forks set the seat at 18″ or 20″ from the floor. It’s a setup adjustment, so we suggest doing it once when the chair arrives.

Does the back height adjust?

Yes. The L4 has a height-adjustable back that sets at 16.5″ or 18.5″.

What’s the difference between desk arms and full arms?

Desk arms are shorter in front so you can roll up to a table. Full arms run the length of the seat and give more support when standing up. Both flip back for side transfers. Full arms are offered on the 18″ x 18″ model.

Should I get swing-away footrests or elevating legrests?

Swing-away footrests suit most users. Elevating legrests lift the legs, which helps with swelling, a cast or a leg that needs to stay raised. Elevating legrests are offered on the 16″ and 20″ wide seats.

Will it fit through my doorways?

Overall width is 23″ with a 16″ seat, 25″ with an 18″ seat and 27″ with a 20″ seat. Measure your narrowest door first.

Does the Traveler L4 fold?

Yes. It folds to 11.5″ wide. Take the footrests off before lifting it into a car.

Can I ride in the wheelchair in a car or van?

No. Graham-Field’s manual says to transfer to the vehicle seat and use the vehicle’s seat belt, and to store the folded chair in the back seat area or trunk, never the front seat.

What’s the warranty?

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty: sideframes and crossbraces five years, wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks one year, other durable parts six months. Labor isn’t included.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
