Description

Everest & Jennings Advantage LX Wheelchair – Basic Steel Wheelchair With Your Choice of Seat, Arms, Footrests and Upholstery

The Everest & Jennings Advantage LX wheelchair (often listed as the Everest Jennings Advantage LX wheelchair) is the plain, dependable chair most people picture when they think “wheelchair”: a folding carbon steel frame, 24″ rear wheels with handrims, 8″ front casters, padded armrests and a sling seat and back. Graham-Field builds it as a low-maintenance chair with a silver vein hammertone finish, and rates it for users up to 300 lb, evenly distributed.

If you’re shopping for an Advantage LX wheelchair, you’re really choosing four things: seat size (16″, 18″ or 20″ wide, all 16″ deep), arm style, front rigging and upholstery. You set each one in the dropdowns above, and the “Choosing Your Options” section below explains what each choice means in everyday use. Every version has a 19.5″ seat height, a 16.5″ back and folds to 11.5″ wide.

As a basic wheelchair for home, appointments and trips out, E&J keeps it simple on purpose: tool-free front rigging that swings out of the way for transfers, heel loops on the footrests, a chart pocket on the back and a hammertone paint job made to hold up to daily use.

Why Choose the E&J Advantage LX?

Most people who need a manual wheelchair don’t need anything exotic. They need a chair that’s sized right, folds into the trunk, has the right arms for how they get in and out, and has footrests that fit their legs. The Advantage LX gives you those choices up front instead of one fixed configuration.

It’s also a familiar design. The front rigging is what Graham-Field calls “industry compatible,” the frame is carbon steel and E&J has made standard wheelchairs for decades. That makes the Advantage LX a practical everyday chair for a parent coming home from the hospital, a spare chair for the car or a first wheelchair for someone who just needs help with longer distances.

Who Is the Advantage LX Wheelchair Best For?

The Advantage LX is a good fit for:

  • Adults up to 300 lb who need a standard folding wheelchair for daily use at home and outside
  • Caregivers who push a family member to appointments, church or the store and fold the chair into a car
  • Users who move themselves with the 24″ rear wheels and handrims
  • People who want desk arms to roll up to a table, or full arms for more support when standing
  • Anyone with leg swelling or a leg in a cast who needs elevating legrests (choose them in Front Rigging)

New to wheelchairs? Our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base explains seat sizes, arm styles and footrests in plain terms, and the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool asks a few questions to point you to the right type.

Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?

  • Users over 300 lb or who need a seat wider than 20″: look at a heavy-duty chair such as the Graham-Field Traveler HD Heavy Duty Bariatric Wheelchair.
  • People who push with their feet: the 19.5″ seat is a standard height. A hemi-height chair like the E&J Traveler SE Plus can be set lower so the feet reach the floor.
  • Anyone who needs to rest reclined or have head support: a reclining wheelchair with a headrest, such as the E&J Advantage Recliner, is the better tool.
  • People who will always be pushed and want the lightest chair: a transport chair with small rear wheels weighs less and folds smaller, but the user can’t push it themselves.

300 lb Capacity on a Carbon Steel Frame

Graham-Field rates every Advantage LX for a maximum of 300 lb, evenly distributed. The frame is carbon steel with a hammertone finish, and the chair weighs about 40 lb (40.2 lb for the 20″ seat), which is GF’s approximate figure and changes a little with the arms and front rigging you pick. Steel makes it heavier than an aluminum lightweight chair, but it’s a sturdy, simple frame with little to wear out.

19.5″ Seat Height, 16″ Deep Seat and 16.5″ Back

All versions have a 19.5″ seat-to-floor height, a 16″ seat depth and a 16.5″ back height, with an overall chair height of 36″. The black padded upholstery (nylon or vinyl, your choice) comes with a chart pocket on the back for papers.

24″ Rear Wheels and 8″ Front Casters

The 24″ rear wheels have handrims, so a user with good arm strength can push themselves, and the 8″ front casters swivel for turning. A wheel lock on each rear wheel holds the chair still for transfers. E&J’s manual is clear that wheel locks are for parking, not for slowing down.

Tool-Free Swing-Away Front Rigging With Heel Loops

The footrests or legrests lift off and swing out without tools, so you can get them out of the way when standing up, sitting down or folding the chair. Swing-away footrests come with heel loops to help keep the feet from sliding back, and the footplate length adjusts for the user’s leg length. E&J says the lowest point of the footplate should stay at least 2.5″ off the ground.

Folds to 11.5″ for the Car or Closet

Take off the footrests, pull up on the center of the seat and the X-frame folds down to 11.5″ wide. Detachable arms come off too (fixed arms stay on), which makes the chair lighter to lift into a trunk.

Choosing Your Options

There are four dropdowns: Seat Size, Arms, Front Rigging and Upholstery. Not every combination is made; the dropdown only offers the ones Graham-Field builds, listed in the table below.

Seat Size (16″, 18″ or 20″ wide, all 16″ deep): measure across the widest part of the hips while seated and add about 2 inches. A seat that’s too narrow pinches and rubs; one that’s too wide makes the handrims hard to reach. The 18″ seat fits most adults. Seat width also sets the chair’s overall width: 26.5″ for the 16″ and 18″ seats and 30.5″ for the 20″ seat, so check your narrowest doorway before you choose the 20″.

Arms: Detachable desk arms are shorter at the front so the user can roll up close to a table or desk, and they lift off for side transfers. Detachable full arms run the full length of the seat and give more forearm support when pushing up to stand, and they lift off too. Fixed full arms don’t come off. They’re simple and solid, but they make sideways transfers harder.

Front Rigging: Swing-away footrests are the everyday choice and come with heel loops. Elevating legrests raise the leg, which helps with leg swelling, a leg in a cast or a knee that has to stay straight. Both swing away and lift off.

Upholstery: both are black and padded. Nylon breathes and feels more like fabric; vinyl wipes clean easily, which helps with spills and incontinence.

E&J Advantage LX vs. E&J Traveler SE Plus

Both are E&J steel standard wheelchairs rated for 300 lb with 24″ rear wheels and 8″ casters. The Advantage LX gives you the choice of nylon or vinyl upholstery and a fixed 19.5″ seat height, and it’s the straightforward everyday chair. The Traveler SE Plus is a little lighter at about 36.5 lb, comes in vinyl only, and has a two-position axle and caster fork so the seat can sit at 18″ or 20″ for users who push with their feet. If nobody in the house needs to foot-propel, the Advantage LX is the simpler choice.

Common Problem → Advantage LX Solution

Problem: Mom is coming home after a hip replacement. She can walk short distances in the house, but she can’t manage the walk from the parking lot to her follow-up visits, and her left leg is still swollen by the end of the day.

Solution: An 18″ x 16″ Advantage LX with detachable desk arms and elevating legrests. The legrest keeps her leg raised on the ride in, the arms lift off so she can slide over to a car seat or exam table, and the chair folds to 11.5″ for the trunk.

“Can we switch to regular footrests once the swelling goes down?” The chair you order comes with the rigging you choose. E&J’s front rigging is tool-free and swaps on the same hinge pins, so ask us about adding a pair of swing-away footrests later.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: hip width seated plus about 2″. Choose 16″, 18″ or 20″.
  • Seat depth: 16″ on every size. With the user sitting all the way back, there should be about 2 to 3 fingers of space between the front of the seat and the back of the knee.
  • Seat height: 19.5″ from the floor. Feet should rest on the footplates with the thighs level.
  • Doorways: overall width is 26.5″ (16″ and 18″ seats) or 30.5″ (20″ seat). Overall depth is 32″ and height is 36″.
  • Car trunk: folds to 11.5″ wide. It weighs about 40 lb before you take off the front rigging and detachable arms.
  • User weight: 300 lb maximum, evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

E&J’s manual asks for a little regular care. Wipe the frame with a soft cloth at least once a week, dry the chair right away if it gets wet, and wash the frame every three months with mild soap and water (no waxing needed). Clean the upholstery and plastic parts once a month with mild soap and water. Don’t use solvents, abrasive cleaners, spray silicone, steam or pressure washers. Check the tires and handrims weekly and have a dealer check the wheel and caster bearings every six months.

What’s Included

The wheelchair comes with the arms, front rigging and upholstery you select, the chart pocket on the back and heel loops on swing-away footrests. E&J’s manual notes a hex wrench is furnished with the chair for adjustments. Anti-tippers, a positioning belt, an oxygen holder and a lap tray are sold separately. Ask us to confirm the box contents for your configuration.

Warranty

Graham-Field covers the Advantage LX with a one-year limited warranty for the original purchaser. E&J’s user manual breaks it down: sideframes and crossbraces, plus wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks for one year, and all other durable parts for six months. Labor isn’t included. Call us at 585-505-6665 if anything goes wrong and we’ll help you with the claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Everest & Jennings Advantage LX wheelchair?

It’s a basic folding steel wheelchair from E&J, rated for 300 lb, with 24″ rear wheels, 8″ casters, padded armrests and a 19.5″ seat height. You choose the seat size, arm style, footrests or legrests, and nylon or vinyl upholstery.

How much weight can the Advantage LX hold?

Graham-Field rates it for 300 lb, evenly distributed. If the user is close to that or needs a wider seat, choose a heavy-duty or bariatric wheelchair instead.

How much does the Advantage LX weigh?

About 40 lb, or 40.2 lb with the 20″ seat. That’s Graham-Field’s approximate figure, and it changes a little with the arms and front rigging. Taking off the footrests and detachable arms makes it lighter to lift.

What seat size should I order?

Measure hip width while seated and add about 2 inches. The Advantage LX comes in 16″, 18″ and 20″ widths, all 16″ deep, and 18″ fits most adults.

Will the 20″ seat fit through my doors?

Check first. The 20″ seat makes the chair 30.5″ wide overall, while the 16″ and 18″ seats are 26.5″ wide. Measure your narrowest doorway with the door fully open.

Should I choose desk arms or full arms?

Choose desk arms if the user eats or works at a table, because the shorter front lets the chair roll in close. Choose full arms if they need more support pushing up to stand. Both detachable styles lift off for side transfers; fixed full arms don’t.

When do I need elevating legrests?

Pick elevating legrests for leg swelling, a leg in a cast or a knee that needs to stay straight. For everyday sitting, the swing-away footrests are lighter and simpler.

Nylon or vinyl upholstery?

Nylon breathes and feels softer in warm weather. Vinyl wipes clean easily, which is handy for spills or incontinence. Both are black and padded.

Does the Advantage LX fold?

Yes. Remove the footrests, lift the center of the seat and the frame folds to 11.5″ wide for a trunk or closet.

Can the user push the Advantage LX themselves?

Yes. The 24″ rear wheels have handrims for self-propelling, and a caregiver can push from the handles.

What warranty comes with it?

A one-year Graham-Field limited warranty. The user manual lists the frame, crossbraces, wheels, handrims, front rigging and forks at one year and other durable parts at six months, with labor not included.

Does Medicare cover a standard wheelchair?

Medicare Part B may help cover a manual wheelchair as durable medical equipment when a doctor prescribes it for use at home. Coverage depends on your plan and the supplier, so check with your plan before you order.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
