Description

Everest & Jennings Traveler HTC – Heavy Duty 500 lb Wheelchair Built for Caregivers, Hospitals and Home

The Everest & Jennings Traveler HTC is a 500 lb wheelchair made for heavier users who are usually pushed by someone else. Graham-Field builds it with a heavy-duty reinforced carbon steel frame at the critical load-bearing points, double crossbraces and 5/8″ axles, and rates it for 500 lb, evenly distributed.

What sets the Traveler HTC wheelchair apart is how much of it is aimed at the caregiver: a fixed attendant push bar, wheel locks mounted at the back where the person pushing can reach them, anti-tippers, and a telescoping O2/IV holder that comes standard. Tool-free elevating legrests with aluminum footplates are included on every chair.

If you’ve been looking for a heavy duty wheelchair 500 lb rated, the HTC comes in 20″, 22″ and 24″ seat widths, each 18″ deep (1″ deeper than standard), with embossed black leatherette upholstery that has a double inner lining. It was designed for hospital use and patient transport, and the same features make life easier for a family caregiver at home.

Why Choose the E&J Traveler HTC?

Heavier users need more than a wider seat. They need a frame that’s reinforced where the load goes, upholstery that won’t stretch out, and a chair the caregiver can actually control. The HTC addresses all three: double crossbraces and 5/8″ axles under a reinforced frame, double-lined upholstery, and a push bar plus rear-mounted wheel locks so the person behind the chair can steer and park it without walking around to the side.

For hospitals and clinics, Graham-Field adds inventory controls: fixed desk arms, standard anti-tippers and anti-theft nuts on the front rigging, so parts stay with the chair.

Who Is the Traveler HTC Best For?

The Traveler HTC is a good fit for:

  • Users up to 500 lb who need a 20″, 22″ or 24″ wide seat
  • Caregivers who push the chair most of the time and want the wheel locks and push bar within reach
  • People who travel with an oxygen tank or need an IV pole, since the O2/IV holder comes standard
  • Anyone who needs their legs raised, because elevating legrests are included
  • Hospitals, clinics and care facilities that want parts that stay put (fixed arms, anti-theft front rigging nuts)

Not sure about sizing a bariatric chair? Our Manual Wheelchair Knowledge Base covers seat widths and weight ratings, and the Manual Wheelchair Assessment Tool can help you choose.

Who May Need a Different Wheelchair?

  • People who transfer sideways or use a slide board: the HTC’s desk arms are fixed and don’t come off. Compare the Graham-Field Traveler HD Heavy Duty Bariatric Wheelchair or call us about chairs with removable arms.
  • Users over 500 lb: you’ll need a chair with a higher rating than this one.
  • People who will push themselves full time: the HTC has handrims, but at about 60 lb and with features built around the caregiver, it’s mainly an attendant-pushed chair.
  • Anyone who needs to recline: the HTC has a fixed back. Look at a reclining wheelchair instead.

500 lb Capacity: Reinforced Frame, Double Crossbraces, 5/8″ Axles

Graham-Field rates every Traveler HTC for 500 lb, evenly distributed. The carbon steel frame is reinforced at the critical load-bearing points, has double crossbraces and rides on heavy-duty 5/8″ diameter axles. The hammertone paint is made to hold up to daily use. The chair weighs about 60 lb.

Attendant Push Bar and Rear-Mounted Wheel Locks

A fixed push bar runs across the back of the chair, so the caregiver can push with both hands in the middle instead of on two separate handles. The wheel locks are mounted at the rear wheels, within the caregiver’s reach, which Graham-Field says gives easier maneuvering and control for the person pushing.

O2/IV Holder and Anti-Tippers Standard

Every HTC comes with rear anti-tippers and a black painted telescoping O2/IV holder, so an oxygen cylinder or IV can travel with the user. (Graham-Field notes the O2/IV pole is standard on chairs after serial number HYT039WC.)

Elevating Legrests With Aluminum Footplates

The tool-free, adjustable elevating legrests have durable black aluminum footplates. They raise the legs for swelling or comfort and lower for everyday sitting. Lock nuts on the front rigging keep the legrests with the chair in a facility setting.

24″ Wheels With Non-Marking Polyurethane Tires

The rear wheels are 24″ x 1″ black plastic wheels with black handrims and non-marking polyurethane tires, so there are no tubes to go flat and no scuffs on hospital or home floors. The front casters are 8″.

Double-Lined Embossed Upholstery and 18″ Deep Seat

The seat and back use embossed black leatherette upholstery with a double inner lining for durability, plus a chart pocket on the back. Every seat is 18″ deep, 1″ deeper than a standard chair, with a 20″ seat height and a 16.5″ back. A two-position axle and caster fork give a 2″ seat height adjustment for a hemi position; ask us before ordering if you need the lower setting.

Choosing Your Options

There’s one dropdown, Seat Size. Every Traveler HTC has fixed desk arms, elevating legrests, the O2/IV holder, anti-tippers and the 500 lb rating; only the seat width and overall width change.

Seat Size Overall width Weight capacity Graham-Field code
20″ W x 18″ D 28.5″ 500 lb 3J010330
22″ W x 18″ D 30.5″ 500 lb 3J010430
24″ W x 18″ D 32.5″ 500 lb 3J010530

How to pick: measure across the widest part of the hips (or thighs, if wider) while seated and add about 2 inches. A seat that’s too tight rubs and makes transfers harder; one that’s too wide is harder for the user to reach the handrims and wider to get through doors. Then measure your narrowest doorway: the chair is 8.5″ wider than the seat, so a 24″ seat needs a doorway wider than 32.5″. Call us at 585-505-6665 with your measurements if you’re between sizes.

Traveler HTC vs. a Standard Wheelchair

A standard wheelchair like the E&J Advantage LX is rated for 300 lb, comes with 16″ to 20″ seats that are 16″ deep, and puts the wheel locks at the user’s sides. The HTC is rated for 500 lb, starts at a 20″ seat, is 18″ deep, and moves the controls to the caregiver: push bar, rear-mounted wheel locks and a standard O2/IV holder. It’s heavier at about 60 lb and its arms are fixed, so it trades some portability for strength and caregiver control.

Common Problem → Traveler HTC Solution

Problem: Linda pushes her husband, who weighs about 420 lb, to his appointments. His old chair is sagging, she has to walk around to the front to set the wheel locks, and his oxygen tank rides on his lap.

Solution: A Traveler HTC with a 24″ x 18″ seat. It’s rated for 500 lb, the double-lined upholstery holds its shape, she sets the rear wheel locks from behind the chair, steers with the push bar and his oxygen tank sits in the O2/IV holder. The elevating legrests help on longer waits.

“Can he slide sideways into the car?” Not over the arm. The HTC’s desk arms are fixed, so plan on a stand-and-pivot transfer, or call us about a heavy-duty chair with removable arms.

Sizing & Fit

  • Seat width: hip or thigh width seated plus about 2″. Choose 20″, 22″ or 24″.
  • Seat depth: 18″ on all sizes. Leave 2 to 3 fingers between the seat edge and the back of the knee.
  • Seat height: 20″ (a 2″ hemi adjustment is available through the axle and caster fork; ask us).
  • Back height: 16.5″. Overall height is 36″.
  • Doorways: overall width 28.5″ (20″), 30.5″ (22″) or 32.5″ (24″). Overall depth is 34″.
  • Chair weight: about 60 lb.
  • User weight: 500 lb maximum, evenly distributed.

Care & Cleaning

Graham-Field doesn’t print care steps on the product page. As general advice for a steel wheelchair: wipe the frame and upholstery with a soft cloth and mild soap and water, dry it if it gets wet, and avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners. Check that the wheel locks hold, the anti-tippers are in the down position and all nuts are snug. Ask us for the Traveler HTC user manual for the full maintenance schedule.

What’s Included

Graham-Field lists these as standard: fixed desk arms, tool-free elevating legrests with aluminum footplates and anti-theft lock nuts, rear anti-tippers, the telescoping O2/IV holder, the attendant push bar, rear-mounted attendant wheel locks and a chart pocket on the back. A positioning belt, a lap tray and an anti-fold bar are sold separately. Ask us to confirm the box contents.

Warranty

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty on the Traveler HTC. Ask us for the full warranty terms, and call us at 585-505-6665 if you ever need help with a claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can the Traveler HTC hold?

Graham-Field rates it for 500 lb, evenly distributed, on all three seat sizes.

What seat sizes are available?

20″, 22″ and 24″ wide, all 18″ deep. Measure hip or thigh width while seated and add about 2 inches.

How wide is the chair overall?

28.5″ with the 20″ seat, 30.5″ with the 22″ and 32.5″ with the 24″. Measure your narrowest doorway before you order.

How much does the Traveler HTC weigh?

About 60 lb, per Graham-Field.

Do the arms come off?

No. The HTC has fixed desk arms, which keeps parts from going missing in a facility but makes sideways transfers harder. If the user needs to transfer over the side, call us about other heavy-duty chairs.

Who works the wheel locks?

The caregiver. The wheel locks are mounted at the rear wheels so the person pushing can set them without walking around the chair.

Does it come with an IV pole or oxygen holder?

Yes. A telescoping O2/IV holder is standard. Graham-Field notes it’s included on chairs after serial number HYT039WC.

Are elevating legrests included?

Yes. Every HTC has tool-free adjustable elevating legrests with aluminum footplates.

What kind of tires does it have?

24″ x 1″ rear wheels with non-marking polyurethane tires and black handrims, plus 8″ front casters. There are no tubes to go flat.

Can the user push it themselves?

Yes, it has handrims. Most users of a 60 lb heavy-duty chair are pushed by a caregiver, which is what the push bar and rear wheel locks are for.

What is the warranty?

Graham-Field lists a five-year limited warranty. Ask us for the full terms.

Does Medicare cover a heavy-duty wheelchair?

Medicare Part B may help cover a heavy-duty wheelchair as durable medical equipment when a doctor documents the need. Coverage depends on your plan and the supplier, so check with your plan before you order.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Return Policy

At MedCare Mobility, we understand that purchasing medical and mobility equipment is an important decision. Our goal is to make the ordering, delivery, and return process as clear and straightforward as possible.

Because many of the products we offer are large, specialized, or shipped directly from manufacturer and distributor warehouses, shipping and return requirements may vary somewhat by product and brand. The policy below explains what you can generally expect when ordering from MedCare Mobility.

Shipping & Order Processing

We ship medical and mobility equipment to customers throughout the United States. Orders are processed as quickly as possible, and tracking information is provided once available.

Processing Time

Most in-stock orders are processed within approximately 1–3 business days. Processing may include order verification, warehouse preparation, packaging, and coordination with the manufacturer or distributor.

Some specialty equipment, made-to-order products, oversized items, or products shipping directly from a manufacturer may require additional processing time. Any estimated processing or lead time shown on an individual product page should be considered part of the expected fulfillment timeframe for that item.

Transit & Delivery Time

Once shipped, many standard orders arrive within approximately 3–7 business days. Larger medical equipment, freight shipments, specialty products, and certain manufacturer-direct orders may require additional transit time.

Tracking information will generally be emailed once the shipment has been processed by the carrier. If you have questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us at info@medcaremobility.com.

Alaska, Hawaii & Special Shipping Areas

Orders shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and certain remote or limited-access areas may be subject to additional shipping charges. If an additional charge is required after your order is reviewed, we will contact you before proceeding whenever additional payment is necessary.

Freight & Oversized Equipment

Hospital beds, patient lifts, large recliners, ramps, and other oversized medical equipment may ship by freight rather than standard parcel service. Unless a specific delivery service is stated on the product page or order, freight delivery does not automatically include inside delivery, assembly, installation, or removal of packaging.

30-Day Return Policy

We want you to feel comfortable ordering from MedCare Mobility. Most eligible products may be returned when a return is requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the conditions and exclusions outlined below.

Eligible products generally include:

  • Electric and power wheelchairs
  • Manual and lightweight wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Patient lifts
  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Hospital and homecare beds
  • Eligible medical mattresses
  • Geriatric and medical recliner chairs
  • Overbed tables
  • Bathroom benches and shower chairs
  • Other eligible medical and mobility equipment

Return eligibility can vary by manufacturer and product type. Products specifically identified as non-returnable, custom, made-to-order, or otherwise subject to special return terms are governed by those terms.

Return Authorization

Please contact us before shipping any product back. Returns must first be approved and issued a Return Authorization (RA) and the appropriate return shipping address.

You may request a return by emailing info@medcaremobility.com or contacting our customer service team through the live chat on our website.

Please do not return merchandise to an address shown on the original shipping label unless specifically instructed to do so. Many products ship directly from manufacturer or distributor warehouses, and the correct return location may be different from the original shipping location.

Condition of Returned Merchandise

To qualify for a return and refund, the product must be returned:

  • In brand-new and unused condition
  • In its complete original manufacturer packaging
  • With all manuals, components, hardware, accessories, and included materials
  • Without damage, modification, assembly wear, stains, odors, or other signs of use
  • In resalable condition upon inspection by the receiving warehouse or manufacturer

We strongly recommend keeping the original box, pallet, protective materials, and packaging until you are certain that you intend to keep the equipment. Large medical equipment can be difficult or impossible to return safely without its original packaging.

Restocking Fees

Approved returns are subject to a mandatory restocking fee, generally ranging from 15% to 20% of the applicable product price. The exact restocking percentage varies depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of equipment being returned.

These restocking charges are assessed to us by the manufacturer or distributing warehouse when merchandise is returned. MedCare Mobility does not add the fee simply as a return penalty; when the manufacturer requires the charge, we must pass the applicable amount through as part of processing the return.

If you would like to know the applicable restocking percentage for a particular product before ordering, please contact us and we will be happy to help whenever that information is available from the manufacturer.

Return Shipping & Shipping Charges

The customer is responsible for shipping charges associated with the order when making a standard return.

Customers are responsible for arranging for the approved merchandise to be returned to the return address provided with the Return Authorization. In certain cases, we may be able to provide a prepaid return label or coordinate return transportation for your convenience. When provided, the applicable shipping cost may be deducted from the final refund.

Because some medical equipment is oversized or requires freight transportation, prepaid labels or carrier call tags may not be available for every product. Our customer service team will provide the available return instructions when your return is authorized.

Non-Returnable Products

For health, hygiene, safety, customization, and manufacturer-policy reasons, certain products are not eligible for standard returns.

We currently do not accept returns on:

  • Parts & accessories
  • Wheelchair cushions and support accessories
  • Patient lift slings
  • Custom or made-to-order products
  • Products specifically identified as non-returnable on the product page

If a non-returnable product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, please contact us promptly. Non-returnable status does not prevent us from assisting with a legitimate shipping damage, defect, warranty, or fulfillment issue in accordance with the applicable manufacturer and carrier procedures.

Damaged or Incorrect Orders

We take shipping damage seriously and will work with you to help resolve legitimate delivery issues.

If your product arrives damaged, please notify MedCare Mobility within 48 hours of delivery. Whenever possible, retain the shipping carton, pallet, packaging materials, and the product exactly as received and take clear photographs of the packaging and any visible damage.

Reporting damage promptly is important because carriers and manufacturers have limited timeframes for filing freight and shipping claims.

If you receive an incorrect product or believe there is a manufacturer defect, please contact us before returning or disposing of any merchandise or packaging so that we can provide the appropriate instructions.

Refused Deliveries

Please contact us before refusing a delivery unless the shipment has obvious significant freight damage and the carrier is documenting the damage at delivery.

A shipment that is refused for reasons unrelated to verified shipping damage may be treated as a standard return. Applicable restocking and shipping charges may therefore be deducted from the refund.

Return Shipping Deadline

Once a return has been approved and return instructions or a return label have been issued, the merchandise must be shipped within 72 hours unless MedCare Mobility provides different instructions in writing.

This is particularly important when a return is approaching the end of the applicable return period. Returns shipped outside the authorized timeframe may be refused by the manufacturer or warehouse and may no longer qualify for a refund.

Refund Processing

Refunds are processed after the returned merchandise has been received and inspected by the applicable warehouse or manufacturer and the return has been confirmed to meet the return requirements.

The applicable restocking fee, shipping charges associated with the order, and any other authorized return-related charges will be deducted from the amount eligible for refund.

If returned merchandise is used, damaged, incomplete, missing original packaging or components, or otherwise returned in a condition that prevents the manufacturer or warehouse from accepting it as new and resalable merchandise, the return may be refused or the refund may be reduced in accordance with the manufacturer’s assessment.

Custom & Made-to-Order Products

Products identified as custom, configured, made-to-order, special-order, or manufactured specifically for the customer cannot generally be canceled once production or manufacturer processing has begun and are not eligible for standard returns.

For custom products, cancellation may only be possible during the initial processing period and before production or customization begins. Because production schedules vary by manufacturer, we encourage customers to contact us immediately if a change is required.

If a custom product arrives damaged or has a legitimate manufacturing defect, we will work with the manufacturer to pursue the appropriate resolution, replacement components, repair, or other available remedy under the applicable manufacturer policy or warranty.

Questions Before Ordering?

Medical equipment can vary considerably in size, configuration, compatibility, and intended use. If you are unsure whether a product will work for your needs, we strongly encourage you to contact us before placing your order.

Our team is happy to help review product specifications, dimensions, options, compatibility, and available manufacturer information so you can make a more informed purchasing decision and reduce the possibility of needing a return.

For shipping, return, or product questions, contact us at info@medcaremobility.com or speak with us through the live chat on our website.
